Bastian… Playing on a beautiful evening at the Skip Dillow Memorial Field at the Bland Co. Sports Complex, the Fort Chiswell Pioneers baseball team defeated Chilhowie 5-0 to advance to Conference 46 championship.

Pitching their third pitcher in their rotation, the Pioneers got a gem from Chance Davis. He tossed a complete game, six-hit shutout. His biggest trouble was in the fourth inning with two outs he gave up back-to-back singles, but he then got the third out on a pop fly to the Fort Chiswell second baseman. Davis helped himself at the plate as he scored a run and knocked in one. Tanner Bailey singled and doubled, scored a run and knocked in one. Ben VanDyne had the other RBI for the Pioneers. Bryson Booher scored twice. He walked twice and stole home to score one of those runs.

Chilhowie got two hits from Matthew Delp, one single and the other a double. The Warriors got a hit each from Logan Craver, Joe Blevins, Travis McNew and Tucker Robertson. Leo Vitale went the distance on the mound giving up five runs on five hits. He walked three and threw two wild pitches.

With the game tied at zero going into the bottom of the fourth, Fort Chiswell (16-3) scored twice. VanDyne hit a sac fly to score Booher. Then Bailey scored on a wild pitch. The Pioneers got some insurance runs in the fifth as Dallas Beasley scored on a Davis single. Booher was then intentionally walked, but Bailey stroked a run scoring single as Davis crossed the plate. Booher then stole home to round out the Pioneer uprising.

Fort Chiswell head coach Derrick Jackson said, ”What a pitching performance by Chance Davis today! We wasn’t that sharp hitting the ball, but we played errorless ball.”

The Pioneers will face Galax at 6 pm on Friday at Bastian for the Conference 46 Championship.

NOTE: The Fort Chiswell Pioneer JV team defeated the Chilhowie Warriors JV team 12-8 to win the Mountain West Conf.46 Championship. Connor Rotenizer got the pitching win as he tossed six innings. Leighton Dunford tossed the seventh. Cy Underwood knocked in three and Brody Crockett had two RBIs, as he was two for three at the plate.

Cougars lose to Salem

Salem…The game was settled almost before the people could sit down in their seats. The Salem Spartans sent nine batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring five runs on five hits and stole three bases enroute to a 10-0 Conference 24 semifinal game.

Grant Osteen
Grant Osteen

The Cougars started the game hitting in the top of the first. Jon Osteen hit a liner over the second baseman. His older brother Grant then hit a screamer on a hit and run that the shortstop dove behind second base and flipped to the second baseman. He then threw it to first for a double play. Andrew Lowe singled as did Camden Underwood who went to second on the throw to third. Salem third baseman then threw to second apparently to throw out Underwood at second. So the Cougars had three hits and a fourth ball that was scorched and had nothing to show for it.

The Spartans then hit the Cougars with their five spot which took a lot of the air out of them. Salem would tack on three more runs in the second as Jacob Dodd singled, stole second and third. Joseph Quinn walked and stole second. Noah Beckley then hit a gapper to left center that plated both of them. John Stover then doubled him in and the route was on.

Nathanael Remington
Nathanael Remington

The Cougars, after the second inning, collected only two hits as Salem pitcher Trevor Austin settled down. Nathanael Remington was two for two to lead the Cougars who just couldn’t get the big hit or a big break. Tyler Waddell, Jon Osteen, Andrew Lowe, Camden Underwood and Hunter Shrewsbury all had one hit each. Shrewsbury was the starting and losing pitcher as he deserved better, but it wasn’t meant to be on this night in Salem.

Salem (13-7) will advance to the Conference 24 championship and also get a regional berth with the win. Beckley was two of three at the plate, scored twice and knocked in four big runs. Stover had two RBIs on a three for three performance and scored twice. Austin went all five innings scattering seven hits. He walked no one and struck out just one.

Cougar head coach Jared King said, ”Give Salem credit; they came out super aggressive. They stole, what, eight bases in the game? They took advantage of some mental mistakes we made. I didn’t think we played badly.” Coach then added, “I told my guys after the game baseball can be a cruel game sometimes. We hit two balls right on the nose and they turn both of them into double plays. We hit three or four others that were right at them. They made plays! We just couldn’t buy a break. They scored early and we didn’t answer them and the score makes it look worse than what it was. That’s baseball.“

Coach King was then asked about Grant Osteen playing his last game as a Cougar and he replied, “Grant is going to be missed. I hate it for him on how this ended. He’s everything we talk about. He’s tough mentally, a team player, a tough-minded kid. He’s as tough a kid we have coached. He’s a warrior.”

So the Cougars finish the season with a 9-11-1 record. The most wins in Coach King’s three years in a season. They have lot of kids returning. They will have to find some more consistency. The most consistent thing about this year’s team was its inconsistency. The pitching needs to be better. They need to hold runners on better. Cougar catchers need to work more on throwing runners out. Salem stole eight bases in this game today and all of them scored! They need as a team to make less mental mistakes and make more baseball plays. Seniors Grant Osteen and Tyler Vaughan will be missed. With a few breaks this season the record could have been better. It’s the old should of, could of, but didn’t.

Conference 24 opens with a Cougar win

Dublin… The Pulaski Co. Cougars jumped on the William Fleming Colonels in the first inning scoring six runs. They went on to defeat them 10-0 in five innings.

Hunter Shrewsbury went two for two at the plate. He had two singles, scored two runs and knocked in one. He also was the starting and winning pitcher going one inning as he surrendered just one walk.

The Cougars used five pitchers, with each one of them going one inning. Nathanael Remington who struck out all three batters he faced relieved Shrewsbury. Dylan Danner then pitched the third as he struck out two and walked one. Thomas Anderson pitched the fourth as he gave up the only Fleming hit. JT Thompson then pitched the fifth inning as he walked one and struck out one.

Fleming’s only hit was by Bryson Guerrant in the fourth. He also reached base on an error in the first. Bryce Johnson drew a walk, as did Cameron Mumford and Robert Butler. The only other Fleming batter to reach base was Ross Mumford on a Cougar error. Cameron Mumford took the loss for Wm. Fleming as he gave up six runs on three hits. He had control problems from the start as he walked five and hit four.

Braeden Blevins knocked in three huge runs for the Cougars, and Jon Osteen had two RBI’s. Cougars (9-10-1) head coach Jared King said, “This was a kind of tough game to coach. We had to stay up as we jumped on them early. We got most everybody in the game. I’m very proud of this team. We won a conference playoff game.” He then remarked, “We came out with good intensity today. We need to match that intensity against Salem tomorrow.”

The Cougars will now travel to Salem as they play the Spartans at Kiwanis Field. The two teams have faced each other twice, with the Spartans coming out on top of both contests. First pitch is scheduled for 6 pm.
