Max Meadows…The Fort Chiswell Pioneers came out a little sluggish and committed turnovers at the wrong times as they lost to the Galax Maroon Tide 54-52 in their opening round game of the First Community Bank Christmas Tournament held at Fort Chiswell High School.

Galax only put one player, Ethan Robinson, scored double figures with 13 points, but he scored five of those down the stretch to pull out the victory. Cade Ashworth pumped in nine points, Gage Cooke chipped in eight and Keaton Beeman scored seven.

The Pioneers (3-3) were lead by Isaiah Ramsey with 19 points. Tanner Bailey had 12 and Matthew Musick pumped in 11 as he stroked three three-pointers. “We didn’t value the basketball tonight,” said a dejected Fort Chiswell head coach Derrick Jackson. “We had too many defensive lapses and we were only six of 15 in the second half from the charity stripe. We are in a rut and we’ve got to work through it.”

The loss means the Pioneers will face the Alleghany (NC) Trojans. The George Wythe Maroons 72-43 subdued the Trojans. George Wythe (5-0) got 27 points from Jake Martin, 13 from Josh Reeves and Noah Atwood produced 11 for the Maroons. Alleghany got 13 points from Ryan Sturgill and 11 by Alex Pruitt. “We didn’t play that well,” said Geo. Wythe head coach Pat Burns. The Maroons will now take on the undefeated Grayson Co. Blue Devils in the second round.

Bobcats bring down the Cougars

In front of a standing room only crowd, the Pulaski Co. Cougars ran out of gas in the fourth quarter as they fell to Radford 71-52

Down only four 49-45 going to the final period the Cougars could only manage seven points, while Radford scored 22.

Radford got a team and game high 25 points from point guard Quinton Morton-Robertson, 19 from big man Miles Jones and freshman Cam Cormany knocked down 12.

The Cougars (5-2) were lead by Kade Akers with 18 and Logan Robertson chipped in with 15 in the loss.

The Bobcats (4-0) went into intermission up 29-25 after they were down 14-12 after the opening quarter. The third quarter shows the Bobcats start with an 8-0 run before the Cougars cut that to three, 47-44 and with the ball with 1:30 left in the quarter. Then after battling back from 12 down the Cougars saw the Bobcats go on a 10-0 run to start the last quarter, and this time the Cougars simply ran out of gas.

“We battled, we competed and we came from behind twice, but we didn’t have anything left in the tank for a third comeback,” said Cougar head coach Andrew Hart. “I think this was like a conference playoff atmosphere here tonight. We didn’t make plays to start the fourth quarter and they did. They (Radford) are well coached; they have toughness and gave great effort. We did too for three quarters. They present match up problems for you.”

Radford head coach Rick Cormany remarked,” It was a battle out there. I thought our transition offense was the difference in the game. They (Cougars) are well coached, and they battled tooth and nail.” He then added,” We had a great crowd here and this game will help both teams, I believe.” Just before the game Radford unveiled their 2016-17 State Champions banner as this years team and some of last years graduates came back for the unveiling.

It was a physical game but the Cougars were called for twice as many fouls in the loss.

The junior varsity contest saw the Cougars demolish the Bobcats 66-39. 11 different players scored for Pulaski Co. Dillon Porter scored 14, Jakari Finley 10, Luke Russell and Ethan Gallimore both had nine each. Hayden Gray tallied six, Cooper Dunnigan and AJ McCloud both with four points apiece. Will Carrells had three, as did Corvin Carter. David Hunley and Nathan Swinney both had one field goal for two points. Jackson McManus led Radford with 10 points. The Cougar JV team improved to 5-1 on the season.

Radford will be back in action next week as they play in the Fort Chiswell Christmas Tournament next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The Cougars will not play again until Tuesday January 2, as they will host Patrick Henry in the Cougar Den.
