Radford defeats James River and advances to Region 2C semifinals

Radford…It tough to beat someone three times. The Radford Bobcats played the James River Knights for a fourth time this basketball season and easily defeated them 74-40 in the Bobcat Den.

Assistant Coach Jeff Little- preparing the playing floor

Radford, the defending State Champions in Division 1 last year and are now in Division 2 this year, got 28 points from freshman Cam Cormany. Cormany stroked eight three-pointers and had 22 points at halftime for the 25-0 Bobcats. Quinton Morton-Robertson chipped in with 17 and P J Prioleau scored eight in the victory.

James River (14-11) got 13 points from Darious Cheatwood and Jerrel Andrews had 11 for the Knights.

The Bobcats came out very aggressive as they got 15 of the first 17 points of the game. They lead 24-8 after the opening quarter and never looked back. They were up 25 at halftime (47-22) as every Bobcat that dressed played.

Radford head coach Rick Cormany remarked, “We came out with a full court press tonight. We wanted to set the tempo for the game. We hadn’t pressed them the first three times we had faced them.” Coach then said, “It’s hard to face a team four times, three times is tough enough. Our game with Alleghany last week was the third time we had played them and it was a wake-up call. They (Alleghany) came for a fight and we just came to play. Tonight we wanted to up-tempo the game from the start.” Coach was then asked about his son scoring 28 points and he said, “It helps when we have the best point guard around in Q (Morton-Robertson). Q knew he was hot and he kept feeding him the ball.”

The victory put the Bobcats into the Region 2C semifinal game against Glenvar. It will be the third time the two teams have squared off this season.

Nine different Bobcats got into the scoring column. When asked why he put five new players in with three minutes left in the opening quarter, Coach Cormany remarked, “I had five guys that all needed a breather at the same time.”

Radford will play Glenvar this Friday night at Pulaski Co. High School in the Cougar Den. Game time for the Region 2C semifinal is slated to tip at 6:00 pm.

Pulaski Co. loses to Jefferson Forest in Region 4D Playoffs

Forest…Playing in a regional playoff game for the first time in 11 years, the Cougars battled and fought but lost to homesteading Jefferson Forest Cavaliers 63-57 in the opening round of the Region 4D playoffs.

The Cougars battled from eight points down in the fourth quarter, 50-42, to take a 57-56 lead with just one minute to go in the contest.

Jefferson Forest would then come down and jack up a three from the deep right corner by Austin Stephens to retake the lead 59-57 with 50 seconds left. It was the only three he hit for the game.

Pulaski Co. (12-13) would then come down but Logan Robertson’s shot from in the lane was blocked, and they would foul to send the Cavaliers to the foul line. They would miss the front end of the one and one but this time CC Grubb would drive the lane and his shot was blocked.

Jefferson Forest (15-10) would be fouled and Jordan Richeson hit two free throws to put them up 61-57. On the next Cougar possession, Braden Blevins would miss a five-footer, and the Cougars fouled Richeson as he grabbed the rebound. He would sink both free throws to put the Cavaliers up 63-57 with just six seconds left that capped the win.

The Cougars got a team and game high 30 points from senior CC Grubb and fellow senior Logan Robertson had 13. Eleven of his points came in the fourth quarter. Grubb had the other seven fourth quarter points, as they were the only two Cougars to score in the decisive quarter.

Jordan Richeson and his 29 points led Jefferson Forest. Perry Warner had 11 and Stevens finished with 10.

“We battled, we fought and we came up short,” said Cougar head coach Andrew Hart. “Jefferson Forest made plays the last minute of the game and we didn’t. They (Forest) are a pretty good team, but I’m very proud of how we fought back from nine down in the third quarter and eight points in the fourth.” He then added, “We are going to miss our four seniors and I wish them nothing but the very best.”

This game was a lot like other games this season, as the Cougars would come up short in the fourth quarter. The most consistent thing about this team was they were inconsistent. They would play well for a quarter and not the next. It was a hard team to figure at times.
