Denver Brown carried the ball 27 times for 188 yards as he scored two touchdowns. He scored on a 43-yard run around the right end and down the Pioneer sideline for the Pioneers first score at the 6:01 mark of the first quarter. He also scored on a 30-yard jaunt off tackle running over a couple of Buffalo defenders.

Zach Johnston scored the other Pioneer touchdown as he took the handoff around the left end, turned up and raced into the end zone for a 54-yard score.

Floyd Co. (1-3) had their only lead of the game at 7-6 when Hunter Adkins bulled his way into the end zone from one yard out and kicker Fredy Policarpo split the uprights with 9:46 remaining in the second quarter.

#5 Zach Johnson on his touchdown run

Fort Chiswell (2-2) would strike right back 19 seconds later as Johnson scored on his long run, but the two-point conversion run failed. After holding the Buffaloes on downs, Fort Chiswell would march down the field going 62 yards on six plays as Brown capped it off with his 30-yard score two-point two-point conversion run upped the score to 20-7.

Floyd Co. would get back on the scoreboard with 1:49 before intermission as Presley Yates ran in from two yards out, but the point after was partially block.

The second half saw both teams defenses step up. The Pioneers would hold Floyd Co. to zero yards rushing on 11 attempts. In fact, they held them to just 11 total yards in the second half. Fort Chiswell offensively would have chances but would have trouble getting first downs, committing costly penalties that would stop their momentum. “I’m happy with the win,” said Fort Chiswell head coach Josh Wingate. “We just continue to hurt ourselves with penalties, blocked missing assignments. We are our own worst enemy. Like I said, pleased with the win, but a lot of room for improvement. We just gutted this one out tonight.”

The Pioneers had 321 total yards to Floyd’s 137. Johnson finished with 113 yards rushing on five carries to go with Brown’s 188.

Floyd’s leading rusher was Yates, as he had 47 yards on 16 attempts. Adkins was next with 26 yards on 12 rushes.

Fort Chiswell will have an open date next Friday, September 21. They will travel to Auburn on Friday, September 28 as kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
