Bobcats defeat Glenvar for Region 2C Semifinal win

Coach Cormany giving some instructions to Cam Cormany

Dublin…Playing in front of a huge crowd at Pulaski Co. High School, the Radford Bobcats doubled up in the third quarter (20-10) as they defeated the Glenvar Highlanders 61-48. It was the third time these two teams had faced each other, and both teams came out with some new wrinkles.

Glenvar (17-10) came out with a triangle and two defense, and the Bobcats started the game in a two-three zone.

Cam Cormany- playing “D”

Radford (26-0) placed four starters in double figures as Kam Edwards paced them with 19 points. Junior point guard Quinton Morton-Robertson hit four three-pointers and finished with 17. P J Prioleau and Miles Jones both contributed 11 points apiece.

Glenvar played man on man against Robertson and Cam Cormany. Edwards and Prioleau made them pay for the triangle part in the first half as they accounted for 14 of the Bobcats 27 points. Radford took a 27-24 lead into intermission but a couple of adjustments against the Highlander triangle and two to start the third quarter proved to be the big difference. Edwards scorched the nets with nine points in the quarter to put them up 47-34 going into the final period. Miles Jones would net six points and Morton-Robertson scored five in the fourth quarter to keep the Highlanders at arms length.

Quinton Morton-Robertson- free throw line

Noah Duncan led the Highlanders with 18 points, as he scored 12 of those after intermission. Noah Lovelace chipped in with 14 points. Senior Logan Williams was held to seven. His three-point buzzer beater Tuesday at Appomattox put them into this Region 2C semifinal contest.

“We figured they (Glenvar) would come out in a junk defense against us,” said Radford head coach Rick Cormany. “That’s the thing about having to face a team three and four times in a season.” When asked about the last time his team started a game in a zone defense, Coach Cormany remarked, “Now with all the Internet and you can see what other teams do, we wanted to show a little different look of our own.” He then added, “Post season you got to show a little something different. My assistants made a couple small adjustments at halftime and it worked out real well. After we got up 10 there late in the third quarter, we decided to slow and make them come out of their defense. Our bench didn’t do a lot for us tonight, and we had to go with mainly our starters. We got tired and it showed from the free throw line.”

Radford was just 12 of 23 from the charity stripe but were 21 of 38 from the floor shooting. They knocked down seven three’s for the game.

The Bobcats play Martinsville at Radford University Saturday night in the Dedmon Center for the Region 2C Championship.
