Girls
The Pulaski Co. Cougars coming off a heartbreaker defeat the night before traveled to Blacksburg and came away with an impressive upset victory over Blacksburg Bruins 48-46. The Cougars got 18 points from senior JJ Gulley and senior point guard Josh Bourne tossed in 16 for the victorious Cougars. Sophomore Lane Nester hit three threes for his nine points.
Blacksburg (12-4) got 12 points from center Owen Walters and 11 from Sam Davis. Tucker Halsey who had blitzed the Cougar’s earlier in the season at the Cougar Den was held to seven points.
The Bruins led 18-14 after the first quarter and took a one-point 28-27 advantage into halftime. The Cougars would then outscore the Bruins 11-7 in the third to take the lead 38-35 going to the final stanza.
The Cougars (10-8) found themselves tied at 44 all as Bourne was fouled going to the bucket. He calmly sank both to go up 46-44 with 18 seconds to go. The Bruins would tie it back up on a Walters layup, with 10 seconds showing on the clock.
Pulaski Co. would then get a baseline jumper from Gulley to go back on top 48-46 with 2.6 seconds remaining. Blacksburg would call time out and then would take a 30-foot jumper that fell short but the Cougars had touched the ball with 0.1 left. After another Bruin timeout, they attempted to toss the ball up at the rim but to no avail.
Cougar head coach Tyler Cannoy was asked after the game, how did you get the team back up after the heartbreaking loss the night before? He replied,” We don’t do well after not playing for a couple of days. We ain’t dead yet! We have some fighters. ” He then said,” We defended well and shot okay tonight. Blacksburg is the best passing team we have faced. They are really good. Proud of the kids here tonight.”
Pulaski Co. is battling for a regional playoff spot for the Class 4 Region D. They are battling Amherst and Jefferson Forest for a spot for a regional spot.
