Roanoke…Sometimes you play with a lot of effort and still lose especially on the road. Such was the case Friday night at Hidden Valley High School. Cougars lost to Hidden Valley 62-58 in overtime.

Hidden Valley got 31 points from Jonah Fitzgerald with six of those coming in the overtime period. His teammates Joseph Keenan contributed 10 and Deven Musselman chipped in with nine points.

The Cougars (10-7) placed three players in double figures with Bryan Roberson leading the way with 15 points. Bryant Grubb knocked in 13 and his brother C C scored 11.

The game ended in regulation tied at 51 all. The Cougars were up 41-30 with 1:30 left in the third quarter, but saw that lead cut to 41-36 going into the final quarter. The Titans called timeout in regulation with 12 seconds to go and Keenan missed a 15-foot jumper and then Fitzgerald missed the put-back as the buzzer sounded sending the game into overtime.

Hidden Valley shot 12 free throws in regulation play. They then proceeded to shoot 12 free throws in just four minutes of overtime play.

Cougar head coach Andrew Hart remarked, “We played with great effort tonight. We just didn’t make enough open shots.” He then added, “If we’d have made a couple of plays down the stretch, we could’ve won here tonight.” The Cougars played arguably their best road game since the holiday break.

The Cougar JV saw their record fall to 10-7, losing to the Titans 54-42. Hidden Valley was lead by Ryan Holliday with 14 points and Grayson Carroll had 10. The young Cougars hit 10 threes in the game. Julian Black hit seven of those as he pumped in 21 points. James Jackson knocked down in 13 points. Cougars will be back on the road Monday night as they travel to Carroll County. The JV contest tips at 5:30 with the varsity following.
