Fort Chiswell loses in second round of Tournament

The Pioneers lost to Alleghany (NC) 52-40 in the second round of the First Bank of Virginia Christmas Tournament. The Pioneers were led by Tanner Bailey with nine points and Bryson Booher with eight. Pioneers head coach Derrick Jackson remarked,”I thought we played hard and competed. I didn’t want us to get into an up tempo game with them. Their guards are good as Hanks is a smooth player for them. ”

Alleghany (NC) got 15 points from guard Tyler Hanks and 11 from Austin Hawkins. The Trojans slowly away to win the game as they stretched a five point lead at halftime into eight going into yjr fourth quarter. The win will put the Trojans in the championship game against the Radford Bobcats.

Radford got into championship game by beating Johnson Co.(TN) 45-27. The Cats defense held the Longhorns to just six points in the first half. Radford got 15 points and 13 rebounds from 6-7 transfer Blake Burdack. Alante Doyle had 11 and Heth Grant 10 in the win.

Three Longhorn players had five points apiece. Jose Guzman, Cody Bailie and Austin Houser.

I n other action the Floyd Buffaloes beat Grayson Co.66-46. The Buffaloes were led by Jared Spence with 17 and Michael Osborne 11. Grayson got 14 and 12 points from Tyler Lundy and Bailey Hawkins ,respectfully.

In the opening game of the day saw Carroll Co. beating Twin Valley 58-42. The Cavaliers’ Grant Haynes pumped in 14 and Jordan Combs has 13. Twin Valley was paced by Tayten Sykes with 10 points, with help from Austin Shortridge and Tanner Wagner scoring nine points each.

The junior varsity seventh place game went to Floyd as they defeated Bland Co. 60-28. The fifth place game saw Carroll Co. junior varsity defeating Grayson Co. 50-34.

The junior varsity third place contest will be played at 12:30 tomorrow ( Wednesday) and JV championship tips at 2 pm.

The Varsity tournament will then resume at 4 with Grayson and Twin Valley for seventh place. Fifth place will be decided between Carroll Co and Floyd Co. at 5:30. The third place game will pit Fort Chiswell taking on Johnson Co.(TN) at 7 and the championship will tip around 8:30 pitting Radford and Alleghany (NC).
