Pioneer pressure helps defeat Tazewell

Max Meadows… Playing a lethargic first quarter, the Fort Chiswell Pioneers came in the second trapping out of their 2-3 zone and full court pressure that wilted the Tazewell Bulldogs as they beat the visitors 48-28.

The Pioneers (2-1) behind Bryson Booher’s seven points in the second quarter, outscored Tazewell by himself to take a 25-13 lead into intermission. Booher finished with 13 points and received help from Colby Rider with 10 points and eight rebounds. Isaiah Ramsey came off the bench to spark the Pioneers as well. He had seven points and four rebounds.

Fort Chiswell head coach Derrick Jackson said, ”We didn’t play well the whole first quarter and not a lot better in the second. I thought Bryson (Booher) sparked us there in the second quarter as did Isaiah (Ramsey).“ Coach then added, “Our trapping and full court pressure bothered them. We’ve got to hit our free throws. What were we tonight, 11 of 26? That cost us against Chilhowie the other night. We’ve got to finish at the rim too.”

Tazewell (0-2) was led in scoring by Dakota Crouse with eight points. Alex Vanhoozer, TJ Kitts and Ben Samaniega all contributed four points apiece.

The Pioneers second half outscored the Bulldogs 23-15 with their pressure defense and Coach Jackson clearing the bench.

The Pioneer junior varsity defeated Tazewell’s junior varsity 61-32. Matthew Musick had 17 and Jaryn McAllister scored 10 in the win. Tazewell got 13 from Austin Horn.

Fort Chiswell will be back in action Friday as they host county rival Rural Retreat. Varsity boys are scheduled for an 8:30 tip. It will be a quad night as the Pioneer girls JV and varsity as well as boys JV and varsity all play.

Cougars get big road win over Wm. Byrd

Vinton… The young Cougar boys basketball squad traveled to Vinton and came away with a nail biting 55-54 road-win over the William Byrd Terriers.

Trailing by double figures in the first and second quarters, the Cougars clawed and scratched just to get back to within eight going into intermission down 34-26. They cut the Terriers lead to five after three quarters 51-46. Pulaski Co. defensively slowed the Terriers down and, with just eight seconds remaining, senior Miguel Garcia hit a contested jumper in the lane to put them up 55-54.

William Bryd came down, and their pass was deflected out of bounds with just two seconds to go. The Terriers called timeout to set up a play, but the Cougars wouldn’t let them get off a shot to get a huge come-from-behind road victory.

The Cougars (3-0) was led by senior point guard Isaac Poe with 20 points and sophomore CC Grubb had 18. Seniors Hesus Hickman and Miguel Garcia both chipped in with eight points apiece.

Cougar head coach Andrew Hart said, ”We didn’t start very well, but we hung in and slowly shut them down. I thought we wore them down some in the second half. This is a huge road win for us.” Coach added, ”Poe, Grubb, Garcia and Hickman came up big for us. I’m proud of how we fought and clawed our way back to win.“

The Cougars and Terriers both had 16 two-pointers; both had five three-pointers. The Cougars hit eight free throws to the Terriers seven. It was a very evenly contested game for both teams, but the Cougars came out on the winning side.

Byrd got 19 points from Damon Childress, 11 from Devon Kasey, seven from Dylan Gravely and Jaylen Wheeler.

The Cougar junior varsity wasn’t as lucky as they lost to the Terriers 61-53. Their record is now 1-2. They got 13 points from Kellen Dalton and nine Jaylin Nowlin.

Pulaski Co. will get back into action next Friday the 11th as they travel to Bassett to take on the Bengals. Junior varsity will tip at 6 pm and the varsity around 7:30.

Pioneers romps over Eastern Montgomery

The Fort Chiswell Pioneers boys basketball team stomped the visiting Mustangs of Eastern Montgomery 64-16. The Pioneers were led by Ben Van Dyne and Andrew Stoots with nine points apiece. The Pioneers lost their opening game earlier this week at Chilhowie but came out on fire and never looked back in the route of the Mustangs.

Fort Chiswell is 1-1 while the mustangs fall to 0-2. Coach Derrick Jackson of the Pioneers remarked, “We kind of shared the “love” as no one scored in double figures . We finished with 39 rebounds for the game as 18 of those were offensive. We also had 26 steals in the game. All of our kids got some playing time and that’s a good thing in a win.”

The Pioneers will be back in action Monday night as they entertain the Tazewell Bulldogs. Junior varsity action tips at 6 pm and the varsity at 7:30 .
