Dublin… During the opening round of Conference 24 playoffs, the Pulaski Co. Cougars defeated the Bassett Bengals to advance to the semi-finals. What started as a close game, took a turn as the Cougars played much better the second half to pull away from Bassett, for a 36-26 win.

The Cougars were up 8-1 after the opening quarter and scored the opening bucket of the second quarter for a 10-1 lead, but Bassett went on a 15-3 run to take a 16-13 lead into intermission.

The second half saw the Cougars coming out in a man to man from their 2-3 zone as they picked up the pace of the game and outscored the Bengals 13-2 for a 26-18 score going into the final quarter.

Senior Miguel Garcia led the Cougars (15-8) with 13 points, and senior point guard Isaac Poe finished with nine. Poe has been out for the last three regular season games with a badly sprained ankle. The Cougars lost two of those three games. CC Grubb was held to four points for the night.

Bassett’s leading scorer was Tanner Whitehead with nine points as the Cougar defense held them to single digits for three of the four quarters.

Cougar head coach Andrew Hart remarked, ”We didn’t capitalize on some things there in the first half. Our defense was real good tonight, and it was nice to have Isaac Poe back out on the court.” Coach Hart was then asked about playing when there’s no school and playing a 2-3 zone and he replied, ”It may have made us a little sluggish in the first half, but I’m happy with our defense tonight. We held them to what, 11 points total in three quarters?”

With this victory, the Cougars will advance to the Conference 24 semi-finals Wednesday night as they face the William Fleming Colonels in Roanoke at a time to be determined.

Up 30-20 at intermission the Cougar offensive went missing as ony two players would hit a field goal. They stroked six three pointers in the first half but hit none in the second. They only hit four of eleven from the charity stripe for the game and was just two of nine the second half. Cougar head coach Andrew Hart remarked, ” Christiansburg didn’t do anything different in the second half from the first half. We just stopped playing hard.
