Cougars slug it out for the win

Hillsville…The Pulaski Co. Cougar baseball team scored 13 runs and collected 17 hits enroute to a 13-8 slugfest win over Carroll Co.

The Cougars got hits from seven of their nine starters and all nine of them scored at least one run. Andrew Lowe was two for three at the plate, hitting a towering two run homer over the left center fence that landed in a yard across the road. He knocked in three, as did Grant Osteen. Osteen had four hits for the game and his little brother Jon had three hits and knocked in two. Both of them scored a run each.

Cougar starting pitcher Thomas Anderson went four and one-third innings. He struck four and walked just one and allowed five hits. He gave up seven runs but only four of those were earned.

Carroll Co. got a two run homer of their own in the bottom of the fifth, when Isaiah Cupp stroked one just to the right of where Lowe had deposited his long “tater”. Cupp scored twice and also singled in the second and drew a walk in the seventh. Caden Hodges also drove in two and scored a run and had two hits. Logan Felts took the loss on the mound for the Cavaliers.

“We hit as well today as we have all season.” said Cougar head coach Jared King. He then remarked, “I give credit to Carroll Co. They played tough and they have some good young players. I thought we executed at the plate real well. Anderson (Thomas) pitched well, except for that one inning. We didn’t help much in that inning as we made some fielding mistakes. He has been our most consistent arm for us all season.”

The Cougars (7-8-1) with the win more than likely locked up a home game for the conference playoffs. Coach King said, “Hopefully this win will get us a home game in playoffs. Who we play is still to be determined but this should get us a home game.”

Not only did the Osteen brothers have a game offensively, Grant relieved Anderson on the mound going the last two and two-thirds, giving up just one run, on one hit and struck out one.

Pulaski Co. will be back in action Monday as they host the Blacksburg Bruins. It will be senior night, so come out and support them in their last regular season home game. First pitch scheduled for 5 pm.

Pioneers get the win over Bland Co.

Bastian…The Fort Chiswell pioneers pummeled the Bland Co. Bears 17-3 in six innings to improve to 13-2 on the season. Dallas Beasley got the mound victory pitching three innings as he struck out four and walked just one and threw a no-hitter. He also walked and scored a run.

All three of Bland’s runs were unearned as Fort Chiswell committed five errors. Three of those were in one inning. The Bears collected four hits for the game. Jacob Watters led them with one hit and scored a run.

Bryson Booher who had four hits, five RBI and scored three times led Fort Chiswell. Ben VanDyne and Chance Davis both had three RBI each. Both also scored two runs apiece. Seven Pioneers registered an RBI and 10 of them scored at least one run in the rout.

Pioneer head coach Derrick Jackson said, “We are happy with the win but we didn’t play well. We committed five errors in a six inns game! We’ve got to straighten that up.” Coach added, ”Booher, Davis, VanDyne and Jarrod Tuck had good game for us. I’m proud of Dallas (Beasley) on the mound tonight.”

Fort Chiswell will play again Monday at home. They are sheduled to host the Chilhowie Warriors, with the first pitch slated for 5 pm.

Pioneers improve to 12-2 with win over Rural Retreat

Max Meadows… Behind the ace pitching of Bryson Booher the Fort Chiswell Pioneers defeated the Indians of Rural Retreat 7-2. Booher threw a three-hitter and struck 15 batters for the win as he improved to 8-0 on the season and the Pioneers are now 12-2.

Booher not only pitched extremely well, he was three for three and was hit by a pitch at the plate. He scored two runs to help his own cause. Lucas Edmonds. Ben VanDyne, and Chance Davis all had two hits apiece. Van Dyne knocked in three and Davis scored three times.

Rural Retreat scored their two runs in the top of the sixth as Trent O’Neil drew a base on balls. Josh Copenhaver reached on an error and then Cory Hayes doubled in O’Neil. Wyatt Sowers then singled in Copenhaver.

Fort Chiswell scored a single run in the first and second and then crossed the plate twice in the third and fifth innings to go up 6-0 after five.

Pioneers head coach Derrick Jackson remarked, ”Booher pitched well for us today. When we don’t strike out, we’re a pretty good offensive squad. I thought Chance (Davis) and VanDyne (Ben) and Bryson too, had outstanding games for us.” Coach then added, ”We fielded the ball well today and I thought the O’Neil kid (Trent) of Rural Retreat pitched very well.”

O’Neil did pitch well for the Indians as he struck out nine Pioneer batters and went the distance but took the loss.

Fort Chiswell will be back in action this afternoon as they travel to Bland Co. to play the Bears. First pitch will be at 5 pm.
