Bobcats barely take down the Buffaloes

Floyd…Due to rain and field conditions on Friday, the Radford vs Floyd game was played on Monday night. In a nail-biter, the Radford Bobcats scored on the first play of the fourth quarter to defeat the Floyd Buffaloes 14-13.

Running back Markell Thompson bulled his way in from one yard out to start the fourth quarter and place kicker Michael Hill split the uprights on the point after to win the game. The Radford defense was a huge part of the game as they held Floyd Co. to just 60 yards of offense in the entire second half.

The game started with Floyd Co. kicking off to Radford as the Bobcats took over at their own 23-yard line. On the their first play from scrimmage, quarterback D J Baylor dropped back to pass. At about that time two of the Buffalo linemen got to him, so he dumped a pass out into the flat to Trace Shepherd. Shepherd broke a tackle as soon as he caught the pass, then broke another one five yards down field and set sail on a 77-yard touchdown. Hill’s kick made it 7-0.

The score remained that way the rest of the quarter. On Floyd’s second play of the second quarter Ian Bary hit Austin Gallimore over the middle for 21 yard touchdown but the point after was blocked, for a 7-6 score. After the Buffaloes held the Bobcats offense to three plays and out, they took over at their 27. Following a Jarrett Agee four-yard run, Bary dropped back but all his receivers were covered as he took off around he left end. He then broke a couple tackles in front of the Buffaloes sideline and ended up racing for a 69-yard touchdown. Kicker Junior Perez point after put Floyd Co. (4-2) up 13-7. That scored held up to intermission as the two teams exchanged a couple of possessions.

The two teams had an equal number of first downs at intermission – six – and where within two yards of having the same yardage, 159-157 Floyd.

Floyd took the opening second half kick and marched down the field, holding the ball for over seven minutes. They were then stopped at the Radford 19-yard line and set up for a 36-yard field goal. The snap was fumbled and the holder scooped the ball up. The Radford defense smothered him back at 35-yard line to take over the ball.

Radford (3-3) then had their best drive of the second half driving down to the Floyd one-yard line on the last play of the quarter. With fourth down on the one, on the opening play of the fourth quarter Coach Saunders called for “jumbo”. That put Markell Thompson a 210-pound runner in the backfield. Thompson took the direct snap and ran over a couple of Floyd defenders at the goal line and fell into the end zone for six to tie the game. Hill would then split the middle of the uprights to put the Bobcats up 14-13.

Radford’s defense would stand tall for rest of the quarter. Floyd took the ball over with 3:30 left in the game. On fourth down at their 40, Bary dropped back and threw a pass over the middle that was battled down. The only problem was a flag was thrown and Floyd had a new set of downs in Radford territory. After three plays Floyd had fourth down again at their own 45. Once again Bary dropped back but the Radford secondary again batted the ball away and the game belonged to Radford. It was their third consecutive win. Head coach Matthew Saunders said, ”Our defense played tremendous again tonight. I can’t say enough about how they played. We scrapped, clawed and played hard to get this win. Floyd is a real good football team and Coach Beale does a great job with them.“ Coach then remarked, ”This was definitely a team effort tonight. I’m proud of how hard the kids played. Our defense is carrying us. Offensively we need to get better. Great effort and big win for us tonight.”

Radford will now have only three days to get ready for the single wing of the Giles Spartans. It will be homecoming for the Cats this Friday. Kickoff is slated for 7 pm at Bobcat Stadium.

Pioneers upset Galax Maroon Tide

Max Meadows—— Playing on an overcast Saturday afternoon and with misting rain falling, the Fort Chiswell Pioneers broke the second longest winning streak in the Commonwealth of Virginia as they defeated the defending state champions Maroon Tide 31-20.

Senior Colby Rider, who scored three touchdowns and rushed for 162 yards on 27 carries, led the Pioneers. He also was credited with 15 tackles from his linebacker position.

Galax (5-1) got on the scoreboard first as Brian Brown rammed his way into the end zone, and Edward Medina’s point-after put them up 7-0 with 6:48 left in the opening quarter. On their third possession of the game, quarterback Carson Orton dropped back, rolled out to his right in front of the Pioneer sideline and threw a pass. Fort Chiswell safety Tanner Bailey stepped in front of the Tide receiver and raced down the Pioneer sideline for a 63 yard touchdown interception. Tyler Dunford tied the game with his kick with 3:05 remaining in the quarter.

After a couple change-of-possessions, the Pioneers would go ahead on a Rider one-yard plunge to go up 14-7 in the middle of the second quarter. They would hold the Maroon Tide and on their next drive Rider bowled his way into the end zone. Dunford’s kick put the Pioneers up 21-7 going into halftime.

Galax got the second-half kickoff, but the Fort Chiswell defense forced a three and out.

The Pioneers took over at their 36-yard line. On second down from their 41, Rider took the direct snap in the “wildcat” formation and went off the right end, shook a couple tacklers and rumbled down the sideline for a 59 yard score to go up 28-7 with 9:42 in the third quarter.

The Tide looked shocked as the Fort defense gave up yards grudgingly. Then with 4:46 to go in the third, Orton would burrow his way in from one yard out and Medina’s kick made it 28-14. The game stayed that way until after a Pioneer punt that put the Tide at their own 10-yard line. Powerful running back Dougie Peoples ran off tackle and down the Galax sideline on his way to a 90-yard touchdown and the Tide were right back in the game. After the Peoples’ run-through, place kicker Medina pushed his point after on the right of the right upright to keep the score 28-20 with 8:34 remaining.

Fort Chiswell would then grind their way down the field holding onto the ball for over six minutes and on fourth and four at the Maroon Tide five, Tyler Dunford hit his first field goal of the season as he hit a 22-yarder that went right down the middle of the goal posts, with just 2 minutes left, for a 31-20 score.

The Tide would then take the kickoff and drive 62 yards hitting on three passes. Then on third down at the Pioneer 20-yard line Orton dropped back and threw a pass over the middle, but Devin Newman would pick the pass off to end the game.

Fort Chiswell players and fans then went wild celebrating, as the upset was complete.

Pioneers head coach said, ”Wow! What a game from our kids today. I can’t say enough for our offensive line. Our defense only gave up one huge play there in second half. What a performance.”

He then said, ”I have so much respect for Galax head coach Dixon (Mark). He has a heck of a program and there’s a reason why they’re the defending state champions. This is a huge win for our kids. Colby Rider was man out there today. He had, I think, 15 tackles on defense and he took over the offense.” He then added, ”Defensively we wanted to try to keep them off balance. We sent our linebackers at different times and at different places. We didn’t wanted to let them double team us on the line of scrimmage.“ When told his team they just stopped the second longest win steak in the state, Coach Tiller remarked, “They made some mistakes today and more importantly we capitalized on most of them. Like I said earlier we wanted to confuse them on whom to back upfront, because they have great line play. We wanted to be aggressive and physical. This win really speaks to our kids working their tails off this off-season. All that work really paid off today. This is huge win. Our offense and defense all did a great job.”

The Pioneers (4-2) have now won two consecutive games for the first time since 2014. The offensive line has been able to play the same five and/or six kids the last three or four games. It sure helps to stay healthy and to have some continuity.

Fort Chiswell will now have to get ready for another Mountain Empire opponent as they host the Narrows Green Wave this Friday. Kickoff is slated for 7 pm.

Cougars prepare for Cardinal and Gold World Series

Dublin…The second annual Pulaski Co. Cougar Baseball Cardinal and Gold World Series will get under way this coming Monday, October 10. The series will consist of five games. It’s not based on who wins the most of those five. It’s based on run differential. Both the Cardinal and Gold squads are encouraged to score as many runs as possible. Last year the Cardinal squad won the most games but the Gold team won the series because of the run differential. Each one of the games will be either five -or- seven innings; that will be determined just before each game.

There will be no admission to any of these games, and the public is encouraged to attend. Concessions will be offered at each game.

Cougar assistant coach Zac Chrisley will coach the Cardinal squad and the Gold squad by Cougar head coach Jared King. Coach King said, ”This is a tremendous opportunity for these players to compete against each other and showcase their abilities to our coaching staff and to each other.“ Coach then said, ”We are excited to have 13 new players that were not on the roster from back in the spring. I look forward to evaluating them and watching them compete for positions.”

A two-week Cougar Challenge will follow the Cardinal and Gold World Series. The challenge will have the players competing in physically and mentally challenging exercises that will accumulate points. At the end of the challenge they will have an obstacle course that is set for November 4th. Tyler Waddell was the winner of the Cougar Challenge last year.

The schedule for the World Series will go as follows, with all games to be played at Cougar Baseball Field: Game 1- Monday October 10, Wednesday Oct. 12, Thursday Oct. 13. Then game four and five will be Tuesday Oct. 18 and October 19. All games will start at 4:30 pm. Once again admission is free to the public and there will be concessions.
