Pioneers will host the Warriors

Max Meadows— Coming off a 61-12 thrashing of Twin Valley the Pioneers will host Chilhowie in the Round of Eight, or the second round of the 1A West playoffs. Fort Chiswell (8-3) against the (9-2) Warriors.

Jeff Robinson, who’s in his fourth year and is also the head baseball coach at Chilhowie, coaches Chilhowie. His overall mark is 19-23 as the headman. The Warriors are averaging 38 points per game and are giving up close to 24 per game.

Fort Chiswell comes into the game averaging 31 points on offense and is allowing 25 per game.

The two teams have two common opponents this season. Both lost to George Wythe and both defeated Rural Retreat. The Pioneers scored 40 points and allowed 53 versus the two teams, while Chilhowie scored 65 but allowed 82 points. Chilhowie lost to Marion and George Wythe. Their wins have come by way of J I Burton, Twin Springs, Tazewell, Northwood, Rural Retreat, Holston, Virginia High, Patrick Henry- Glade Spring and last week knocked off Castlewood 33-28. They are the five seed while the Pioneers are the four seed.

Chilhowie is a veteran led squad with 12 seniors and 8 juniors. Offensively quarterback Alex Delp likes to throw the football. He’s a 6-3 225 pound senior. Greg Sanchez and Will Clark are the two main running backs and Cameron Kestner and Wayne Turley are the targets of Delp’s passing. Clark, Kestner and Turley are all seniors while Sanchez is a sophomore. Their offensive line is also senior laden with Brandon Cale their leader. He’s 6-1 and weighs 285. Andrew Johnson also a senior is 6-1 245 pounder. Tim Hall and Jacob Doss are two other lineman that will start. Hall and Doss are seniors. Hall is 5-11 200 pounds and Doss is 5-11 225 pounds.

Fort Chiswell head coach Todd Tiller remarked, “ Chilhowie will come out in double wing formation. They will run power, counter and jet off of the wing set. Their quarterback is a real good passer, he’s a big kid.” Coach added, “ They like to throw deep. They are a very talented team and have got lot of real good athletes. They are potent on offense, there’s a reason why they are averaging close to 40 a game. “

On defense Chilhowie is led upfront by Cale, and Johnson on the line. Kestner, Sanchez and Turley all are good defensive players at linebackers and in the secondary.

Coach Tiller said,” Chilhowie will run an odd man front, a 50 look. They like to show blitz but are mainly not a big blitzing team. They are in three coverage more times than not. Will change up to a man to man coverage a few times from what we’ve seen on film.” He then said, “Cale is their best lineman on defense as well as offense. They want to control the line of scrimmage on defense. They are going to be a tough matchup for us and we have to be disciplined on defense. They are very well coached and there is lot of similarities between them and us. They show multiple formations on offense. They have lot of seniors that has come through for them and some younger kids that play important parts on the team. Neither one of us made the playoffs last year and both of us are now in the Round of Eight this year.”

Fort Chiswell’s turn around from last year has been remarkable. They’ve gone from winless last year to eight wins and in the final eight this year in the playoffs. This matchup with Chilhowie will probable be a high scoring affair. Who will get the big stop on defense? Who takes care of the ball on offense? Who steps up for their team Friday night? Will 30 points be enough to win? As Coach Tiller remarked there are lot similarities between this two teams. It should, could be an exciting playoff game. Will the difference be the Pioneers all everything Colby Rider? Or will it be some one else?

The Pioneers will go on offense with Logan Smith, Alex Brooks, and Grant Milgrim. Patrick Crawford and Jacob Coake on the line. Warren More gets the nod at quarterback. Colby Rider at tight end, Tanner Bailey and Hunter Parrott are the wide receivers. Andrew Stoots is the “H “back with Sean Morgan and Tyler Jakubiak splitting the running back position. On defense the Pioneers will go with Brooks, Crawford and Devin Newman upfront. Rider, Milgrim and Billy Shrewsberry are the inside linebackers. Stoots and Bailey will be the outside backers. T J James and Anthony Morris start are the cornerbacks, with Logan Newman the free safety. Bailey will do the punting and Tyler Dunford doing the placekicking.

Kickoff is scheduled to be 7pm Friday at C.F. McKinney Stadium – Fort Chiswell High School.
