Greetings and some info

I like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I appreciate every one checking and looking at the website. I started this about 18 months ago as an idea that there is a need for some local and area sports news. On the homepage of this website at the bottom you will see what I call sponsors. They are sponsors in name only. There is no money charged for there sponsorships. I do this because I love sports. It’s not a business for me. I do hope if you need the sponsor’s services, that they provide , you will go by or get in touch with them. If you have become a regular viewer and I surely hope you have, that you tell your friends, neighbors and fellow sports fans. I will be covering the First Community Bank- Fort Chiswell Christmas Tournament starting Wednesday December 28. I also would like to say Thank You, to Kathy Shelor and Tina Quesenberry for their work that they have provided for this website. In the football season I put the games under the scoreboard page. The basketball season the scores are posted under the news page due to so many postponements and game changes. Come baseball time the games results will also be on the news page. On a very personal note, my 96 year old mother passed away back in September and its been very difficult for me, as this will be my first Christmas without her. Once again Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and please keep on checking and looking at my website.

Cougars get big win over Maroon Tide

Dublin…Occasionally it’s hard to get your team to concentrate on a basketball game especially this close to Christmas. It’s even harder to play a team you just beat by 50 points. The Pulaski Co. Cougars did concentrate and defeated the Galax Maroon Tide 55-29. C C Grubb pumped in 16 points as he hit four three’s to go with two other field goals to lead the Cougars. Logan Robertson had eight points and Bryant Grubb came off the bench for seven points.

Ethan Robinson and Dougie Peoples both led Galax, who’s just beginning to get in basketball shape, with six points. Noah Hutchens and Gage Cook both contributed five points each for the 0-3 Maroon Tide.

The Cougars (7-2) led 20-11 after the opening quarter and took a 30-15 advantage into halftime. Coach Hart played mainly his reserves the second half as all 12 Cougars saw action and 10 of them got into the scoring column.

“This was kind of a workman-like game,” said Cougar head coach Andrew Hart. “We got everyone into the game and some players got a little experience that hopefully will help us down the road. We’re out of school; it’s kind of hard to motivate after just playing them Monday night. We did what we needed to do tonight.”

The Cougar junior varsity won their fifth in a row and improved to 8-1 heading into the holiday break by beating the Tide 63-23. James Jackson had 14 points, Luke Russell 11, Hayden Gray nine, Dre Grubb eight points and Gage Mannon six. Julian Black and Jairus Miller both chipped in with four apiece. Galax got six points from Cole Pickett and five from Marques Brown.

Pulaski Co. will be off for the next 10 days or so; they will be back at the Cougar Den on Tuesday January 3 versus Cave Spring.

Fort Chiswell…Leading 40-39 after three quarters, the Fort Chiswell Pioneers saw the Graham G-men go on a 15-0 run to start the fourth quarter as Graham beat the Pioneers 62-46.

The game was back and forth with no team leading by more than four at any point in the first three quarters. Graham led 17-16 after one and Fort Chiswell lead 27-26 at intermission.

While Graham was on their 15-0 run the first four minutes of the final quarter, the Pioneers help Graham by turning the ball over five times in the first three minutes of the final quarter.

Graham was led in scoring by Darrin Martin and Tyrese Ellison both with 12 points. Emil Curto contributed 10 and Cameron Allen had nine points. Those four scored 20 of the G-men 23 fourth quarter points. They outscored the Pioneers 23-6 in the deciding quarter.

Andrew Stoots

Fort Chiswell got 13 points from Senior Andrew Hart, 12 from Isaiah Ramsey and 10 from Tanner Bailey. Bailey was held scoreless in the second half, but Stoots pumped in 11 of his points in that half. Coach Derrick Jackson of Fort Chiswell remarked, “Our guard play wasn’t good there to start the fourth quarter and it cost us.” He then added, ”We played hard and it was a heck of a game except for the first four minutes of the fourth quarter. Proud of how we competed.”

The Pioneers lost as their record dropped to 2-1 and Graham improved to 3-0 on the young season.

The Pioneers will be back in action Thursday night as they take on Grayson Co. in a quad. The girl’s junior varsity starts at 4:30, boy’s junior varsity 5:45, girl’s varsity at 7 and boys varsity will be around 8:30.
