Three Fort Chiswell Football players named to All Group 1A West Region and All 1A State

The Pioneers had three players named to All Group 1A Region teams. Making first team offense is tight end Colby Rider. He also made first defense as a linebacker. Alex Brooks made All region Honorable Mention as defensive lineman and sophomore Logan Newman was named to Honorable Mention as a cornerback. Brooks had two fumble recoveries and Newman had two recoveries as well as seven pass interceptions.

Colby Rider was named to the All State first team defense at linebacker and he also was named to second team All State offense as a tight end. Rider is just now starting his recruiting process. He has already visited Emory & Henry. Colby has also heard from Campbellsville ( KY), Concord, Ferrum, UVA-Wise, William & Mary, East Tenn. St and Richmond so far.

Fort Chiswell football recognized on All Conference 46

The Fort Chiswell Pioneers football team last season when winless and to say the least didn’t make the playoffs. This season that just finished the Pioneers went 9-4 and made it to the State Quarterfinals. Fort Chiswell head coach Todd Tiller has been named Coach of the Year. Colby Rider was named Defensive Player of the Year. The Pioneer coaching staff was named the staff of the year as well.

Conf. 46 first team defense had three Pioneers on named. Rider was at linebacker, Alex Brooks as a defensive lineman and Logan Newman made the team at cornerback.

On the Conference second offense for Fort Chiswell was Tanner Bailey, Hunter Parrott, Tyler Jakubiak, Grant Milgrim and Logan Smith.Rider also was named to All Conference 46 first team offense. Rider had over 1,150 yards rushing and over 450 in passing yards. He scored 28 touchdowns. He also led the conference with 120 solo and 38 assisted tackles for a total of 139. Making second team All Conference 46 on second team defense were, Andrew Stoots, Devin Newman , Milgrim, Tanner Bailey. Honorable mention was Warren ” Pookie” Moore and Jacob Coake. Congratulations to all the Pioneer players and coaches. The Pioneers in the regular season faced seven teams that went on to made the playoffs out of the 10 game schedule. Of their four losses the teams that defeated them had a combined record of 45-9. Tough schedule ,indeed. Two of those teams- Galax and Geo. Wythe played in the state semifinals. Graham and Parry McCluer made it to the state quarterfinals.

Cougars lose to Blue Demons

The Pulaski Co. Cougars had trouble with playing defense, handling the basketball and shooting the ball in the second half that saw them lose to Christiansburg 70-62. The Cougars led by 10 at intermission but their second half woes saw the Demons outscore the Cougars 45 to 27.

Christiansburg was led by D’Angelo Ruff with 19 points, with 12 of those coming in the second half. Isaac Hayden had 13, Jordan Harman 12 and Jared Simpkins chipped in with 10. It was the Demons first win of the season

Pulaski Co.( 4-2) got 19 points from Bryant Grubb. They placed two others in double digits with Bryan Roberson and Logan Robertson both with 11 points each. The Cougars were up 35-25 at halftime but the Demons took their first lead on the last play of the third quarter with a three pointer to lead 49-48.

Cougar head coach Andrew Hart said,” We didn’t move our feet on defense, we didn’t handle or shoot the ball well the second half. Christiansburg didn’t bother us as much as we bothered ourselves.” Coach then added, “We have a lot to work on to get better. We committed 18 turnovers and hit just 2 of 20 three point shots we took.”

The Cougar junior varsity improved to 5-1 as they demolished the young Demons 66-32. 11 players scored for the winning Cougars, with Chris Hay and James Jackson both scoring nine. Dre Grubb had eight, Gage Mannon, Caleb Kirtner and Dillon Porter all had seven each. Jared bruce had 13 for the Blue Demons.

The Cougars will be back in action Saturday as they host Carroll Co . The varsity plays at 6:30 as the junior varsity will play at 3:30.

Cougars trounce Bassett

The Pulaski Co. Cougars got revenge for their only loss of the young season as they trounced the Bengals of Bassett 67-45. Last week Bassett defeated the Cougars in overtime at Bassett.

The Cougars came out smokin’ as they hit five three’s in the first five minutes and scorched the nets for 24 first quarter points and never looked back . They finished with 11 3’s as five different players hit at least one three. CC Grubb lead the Cougars with a game high 17 points as he hit two long shots. Logan Robertson had 16 and hit four three’s. Bryan Roberson had 11 points and stroked three three’s. Bryant Grubb and Kellen Dalton had one three each.

Bassett was led by Skylar Barnes with nine points and Cornel Martin chipped in with eight.

The Cougars(4-1) outscored Bassett in ever quarter as seven players scored.” We showed up tonight and played real well, said Cougar head coach Andrew Hart. ” We shot the ball extremely well snd we also play defense real well .We also took care of the ball, not like at Bassett last week.”

Pulaski Co. junior varsity moved to 4-1 on the seson as they beat Bassett jv’s 46-34. Julian Black has nine points, Dre Grubb eight, Noah O’Dell and James Jackson had six points each. Chris Hay and Jairus Miller both chipped in with four points apiece. Basset got 15 points from Elijah Sacre.

The Cougars will play at Christiansburg Tuesday night with the JV tipping at 5:30 and varsity around 7 pm.
