Cougars defeat Blue Demons

Dublin…Sometimes a basketball game isn’t pretty but you still win. That was the case of Cougars last night as they committed 11 turnovers in the fourth quarter but held on to beat Christiansburg 58-53. The Cougars had 21 turnovers in the game and gave up a lot of second and third chance shots to the Demons but got some revenge from an earlier defeat at the hands of the Blue Demons.

The Cougars placed three players into double figures scoring as they hit nine of 15 fourth quarter foul shots. C C Grubb led them with 14 points, scoring 10 of those in the first half. Bryan Roberson and Bryant Grubb both knocked down 11 points apiece. Logan Robertson hit four of his six fourth quarter free throws and finished with nine points.

Christiansburg got eight points from five different players, Quinton Clayborne, Austin Brown, Jared Simpkins, Bryce Cox and Cameron Nagle. The Demons jumped out to a 15-7 lead but the Cougars went on an 18-2 run from the middle of the first quarter to the middle of the second to take a 34-24-intermission lead.

Pulaski Co. 9-4 saw the Demons go on a 7-0 run to start the third quarter but they would answer by going on 8-0 run of their on. They were outscored in the final period 15-11 and those turnovers made the game get interesting the last two minutes, but Robertson hit foul shot down the stretch for the win.

“We made way to many turnovers tonight, ”said Cougar head coach Andrew Hart. “We did the same thing when we lost at Christiansburg. We just rushed too much in the fourth quarter. We would fortunate to be up early and we held on tonight. I thought we handled the ball well first three quarters of the game. It’s a win and we will take it.”

In the junior varsity game the young Cougars improved to 9-4 as they defeated the demons 56-33. Dre Grubb and Jairus Miller both pumped in 12 points each and teammates Jame Jackson had 10, Dillon Porter and Julian Black had seven each. The Demons got eight points from Jared Bruce and Bryon Lee.

The Cougars will be back in action Friday night as they travel to Salem and then they play at Blacksburg Saturday afternoon. Tip for the Salem games will be junior varsity at 5:30 and varsity at 7 pm. Saturday the Cougar JV tips at 2:30 and varsity at 4 pm. The games at Blacksburg Saturday will be held at the Middle School.
