Pulaski County defeats Salem on senior night

Dublin…Playing on senior night the Cougars played just well enough to win, as they defeated Salem Spartans 64-59. Senior Bryan Roberson led them with 26 big points and CC Grubb knocked down 20. Roberson hit five three’s and CC hit three long shots for the Cougars, who revenged an earlier season loss to Salem.

The Spartans (4-18) got 16 points from Shane Simpson and 13 from Baylor Mabes.

It was a game of runs as the Cougars would go up 31-20 before the Spartans went on a 9-0 run and the Cougars Bryant Grubb would hit a huge three just before intermission to help the Cougars take a 34-29 lead into intermission.

With the game tied at 42, Salem would go on a 7-0 run to take a 49-42 advantage into the final quarter. After scoring a bucket to start the fourth quarter Salem had their biggest lead of the game 51-42 and it was a nine to nothing run.

After a Cougar timeout they would go on a 16-0 run to go up 58-51 with 1:08 left in the contest. CC Grubb was the main threat in that run for the Cougars, scoring 11 of those 16. They would outscore the Spartans 22-10 in the final quarter to pull out the win. The game was like most of this season has went for Pulaski Co. (13-9), as they would play decent for periods of time and then look bad at other times.

Cougar head coach Andrew Hart remarked, “ We did just enough to win. We fell asleep at times tonight on offense and defense.” He then said, ”We made way too many mistakes. We took bad shots and played bad defense, too. It was an emotional, crazy game. It’s been like this most of the season. We are just so inconsistent.”

The Cougar junior varsity improved to 14-8 as they finished their season with a 56-54-thriller victory. James Jackson had a game high 17 points and Dre Grubb produced 15. Gage Mannon and Jairus Miller both chipped in with eight points each. Alex Blanchard’s 15 points led Salem.

The Cougars will be back in action next week for the start of the playoffs. They will either play Salem Monday night at 7 pm or play Wednesday night in the Cougar Den at 7 pm either Salem or Wm. Byrd. It will depend on what happens tonight, with the William Byrd at Rockbridge Co. game. If Byrd wins the Cougars play Monday. If Byrd loses the Cougars will play Wednesday night.
