Radford defeats Parry McCluer

Radford…In a game that was moved to Radford University, the Radford Bobcats came from being down 8-4 to win a wild scoring affair 14-12 over Parry McCluer. Reese Williamson who was 5 for 5 led Radford by knocking in six runs and scoring twice. He had three singles, two doubles and a triple. Taylor Newcome collected three hits and scored four runs. Eric Burdette went three for four, knocked in three runs and scored three. Ty Hamblin had two hits, scored twice and had an RBI. Newcome started on the mound but couldn’t get through the third inning. He allowed eight runs of which seven were earned. He gave up nine hits and walked two. Conner Phillips who went 3.2 innings, striking out two and surrendering only two hits and one run relieved him.

Parry McCluer got four hits from Zach Claytor, scored a run and had four RBIs. He also went four innings on the mound and got the loss. He allowed 11 runs on nine hits and struck out four. Only 7 of the 11 runs were earned. Matt Kiely was three of five and also knocked in four. Zach Higgins went three for four with three RBIs and Hayden Bartley was three of five and scored three in a losing effort. The Fighting Blues scored two runs in the first, three in the second and third innings going ahead 8-3.

Radford (10-5-1) scored three runs in the third and went ahead in the fourth as they scored four more times to go ahead 11-8. Up 11-9 going into the bottom of the sixth Radford pushed three more runs across to go up 14-9.

Parry McCluer (8-5) then would score three times to cut the margin to 14-12 and had the bases loaded as the Bobcats reliever Michael Wheeler was replaced by Ty Hamblin. Hamblin then on just his third pitch enticed Austin Moore to pop the ball up half way between home plate and third base. Humbling calmly called for the ball and caught it ending the game.

“ I think I may need to go to the hospital and get some heart medicine,” said a relieved Radford head coach Greg Ridpath. “ We flat out stroked the ball tonight but we didn’t play smart. We walked to many and made to many errors. This wasn’t pretty but it’s a win. What a night Reese Williamson had for us. I thought Conner Phillips came in and pitched well for three innings.”

Radford will go on the road as they play at James River Friday, with the first pitch slated for 5:00 pm.

Comeback Cougars defeat Carroll Co.

Dublin…Pulaski Co. Cougar baseball team came from eight runs down to take a 12-11 win over Carroll Co.

Pinch hitter Alex Roope came off the bench in the bottom of the sixth inning and hit a single to right to drive in Camden Underwood for the go-ahead run with two outs. Underwood was 2 for 4 at the plate knocking in three, and he scored a run. Hunter Shrewsbury was 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs and scored twice. He also came in to get the save in the seventh as he got the Cavaliers three up and three down. Kam Hall scored twice and knocked in two; Jordan Lytton and Jo Osteen both had two hits apiece. Thomas Anderson, the fifth Cougar hurler, picked up the win as he went 1.2 innings, striking out two and surrendering two hits.

Hayden Farmer led Carroll Co. with two hits in four at bats. He scored twice and had 3 RBIs. Cole Montgomery has two runs batted in, and Logan Rotenizer and Caden Hodges both had two hits apiece. Carroll Co.’s (5-8) third pitcher of the game, Nick Bell, took the loss as he went one inning giving up five hits and four earned runs and hitting a batter.

With the Cougars leading 3-2 after four innings the fire works began. Carroll Co. in their half of the fifth sent 13 batters to the plate. They scored nine runs on six hits as the Cougars helped them by committing two errors. The Cougars used three pitchers in the uprising.

Pulaski Co would fight right back. Down 11-3 they crossed the plate five times as they sent 9 batters to the dish to cut their deficit to 11-8 and knocked out the Cavalier starting pitcher Caden Hodges. Then in the bottom of the sixth the Cougars would get five more runs on five hits as they knocked out the Carroll relief pitcher Preston Kenny. The Cougars sent 10 batters to the plate and scored four of those runs with two outs to pull out the huge comeback victory. Roope would get the biggest hit of all to drive in the go-ahead run.

“I’m so proud of how we never quit and kept battling today,” said Cougar head coach Jared King. “This was a big team win for us. First Alex Roope is so deserving of what he did today, coming through in the clutch. For two years he’s never asked for or complained about anything. He has the best attitude and the guys really pull for him. He’s a joy to have on the team. Then there’s Thomas Anderson who in all seriousness has struggled his last two or three outings. He came in today and did a fine job.” Coach King then remarked, ”This wasn’t the prettiest game, but it’s a big conference win and comeback victory. Lots of guys made contributions, and I’m just real happy for them.”

Pulaski Co. will be back in action Friday as they host the Hidden valley Titans, weather permitting, with first pitch scheduled for 5:00 pm.
