Tigers win Championship

NRV 17U Tigers won a dramatic 5-4 game over Swat to win the USSSA East Coast Championship. Tied at four all going into the bottom of the seventh Pulaski Co. Cougar Hunter Shrewsbury drew a lead-off walk. He then advanced to second on a pass ball. After a strike out Caleb Wetzel hit a fast ball to left field for a base hit to score Shrewsbury for the winning run. Sid Willis came in the third inning and shut down Swat , who at the time led 4-3. Jacob Stuart of Galax started and went 2.2 innings giving up four runs on five hits. Willis went rest of the way facing 13 batters and sat down all 13. The tall lanky Tazewell pitcher struck out five as he picked up the win.

The Tigers were held to six hits but they made them count. Along with Wetzel’s game winning hit, Shrewsbury, Trey Hodson and Wyatt Hage all had one hit apiece. Austin Atkins had two singles and scored a run. Shrewsbury also had an RBI as he reached base all three times up, walking twice. Tiger Head Coach Todd Davis said,” Jacob was a little off but he battled and Sid really came in and slammed the door for us.It was a heck of a game and a great team effort this weekend.”

The Tigers pitching staff gave up just runs , six hits in six games. They outscored their opponents 82 -6.

They will be back in action this coming weekend July 21-23 at Radford University tourney. They will play two games at Salem Red Sox Stadium, one at Radford university and one at Municipal Field on Second Street in Radford- where the Radford Bobcats play their home games. Come out and watch some very entertaining baseball.

NRV Tigers wins semifinal

The 17U Tigers smashed the Va. Flames 13-0 in three innings to advance to the championship. Sid Willis of Tazewell pitched two hitless innings and Trey Hodson pitched a hitless third for the Tigers fourth no-hitter in five games. Jacob Stuart had three RBIs as did Wyatt Hage to help lead the Tigers. Pulaski Co Cougar Hunter Shrewsbury scored two runs as did Stuart , Hodson and former Cougar Camden Underwood. They will now face Swat for the USSSA East Coast Championship.

NRV 17U Tigers advance to Semifinals

The Tigers smashed Rockbridge 19-1 in the quarterfinals to advance to the USSSA East Coast Semifinals. They were led by Wyatt Hage who had 2 RBIs on two hits and scored three runs. Trey Hodson scored twice and doubled in three runs. Catcher Chris Martin scored times and had two hits ,while Tazewell’s Sid Willis had two hits and scored twice. Starting pitcher Caleb Wetzel went the three innings in the slaughter ruled game. He struck out five and the run scored on him was unearned. He did surrender a hit to Rockbridge in the first inning . That is the only hit the Tigers pitching staff has given up in the four games they’ve played in Roanoke this weekend. They will now play the Va. Flames in the semifinals.

NRV Tigers advance to bracket play

The NRV Tigers 17U travel team demolished two teams and will be the top seed for Sunday in Roanoke. Getting their second and third consecutive no-hitters tossed the Tigers beat Va. Express 15-1 and then totally dominated Rockbridge 26-0. Both of those games were three inning slaughter rule contests. In the win over the Express , Pulaski Co. player Hunter Shrewsbury threw a no-hitter in those three innings as he struck out two. He also went 2 for 2 at the plate. He singled, doubled and scored twice. Logan Altizer knocked in three and scored two runs. Austin Atkins, Jacob Stuart, Sid Willis and Pulaski Co. Cougar Bailey Ayers all had two RBIs.

The second game of the day saw the Tigers- hot as the weather- as they scored nine times in the first and an unbelievable 17 runs in the third. 11 of those 17 came with two outs. Altizer had the big blow of the game as he hit a grand slam homer. He also doubled and single as he finished with 6 RBIs in the game . Stuart, Willis, Hage and Pulaski Co. Cougar Bailey Ayers all have three RBIs each. Ayers had a single , double and scored three times. Shrewsbury had an RBI and scored a run. Former Pulaski Co. player Camden Underwood had a triple with two RBIs and scored a run. Trey Hodson picked up the win as he went two innings of no hit ball He had two hits and scored twice to help his own cause. He struck out three and Wyatt Hage pitched the third inning striking out the side. The Tigers outscored their first two day opponents 45-1 and haven’t given up a hit. Three straight no-hitters in 12 innings pitched is heck of an accomplishment as is the 45-1 outscoring of opponents. The Tigers will now be the number one seed for Sunday’s bracket play of the USSSA East Coast Championship.

NRV Tigers 17U defeat Dirt Life

The Tigers used three pitchers, as they tossed a no-hitter and struck out 15 versus Dirt Life , leading them to a 4-0 win in their opening game of the USSSA 17U travel ball play. Patrick Kepler of Lord Botetourt went the first three innings and struck out seven. Jacob Stuart of Galax then came in and struck out five in his two innings of work. Tazewell’s Sid Willis would pitch the last inning striking out the side. The Tigers score single runs in the first, fourth ,fifth and sixth innings for the win. Kepler also scored a run and knocked in one . Trey Hodson, Logan Altizer and former Pulaski Co. Cougar Camden Underwood all drove in a run. Head Coach Todd Davis of the Tigers said,” We got outstanding pitching this evening. We hit just enough to win.” The Tigers are back in action with two games slated for Saturday, July 15.

Bobcats inconsistent in 7 on 7

Radford Bobcats went to Blacksburg to play in 7 on 7 and played without some of their players due to vacations and basketball summer camp . They won one , lost twice and tied in their four appearances. They took on Narrows in their first action and came away with a 4-2 win. Trace Shepherd tossed three scores and Zane Rupe one. Shepherd hit Jaylen Taylor twice and once to Josh Alley. Rupe connected with Alley also for a score.

The second action saw Radford lose to Bluefield 3-1. The Cats lone score came on a Shepherd to Alley toss. The next team up was defending State Champs Bruins of Blacksburg and they once again lost 3-1. Alley was on the end of a long pass from Rupe for the lone score for the Cats. Their last action came against Graham as they tied the G-men at 1 all. The score coming from Taylor on the end of a pass from Rupe.

The Cats JV squad also got in a short period with Blacksburg and won 2-1. The young Bobcats got their two scores on passes from Rupe to Brent Mabry and the other was Rupe to Jamari Taylor.

Radford will be getting a transfer in Conner Lytton from Auburn.
