Byrd defender dove and knocked the ball away as the clock hit zero.

WE got to be more mentally tougher cause our margin of error is narrow.” When asked about not calling a time out with the ball and under 10 seconds to go Coach remarked,” We knew what we wanted to do and I didn’t want them ( Byrd) to set up their defense.”

The Cougar jnuior varsity improved to 3-0 as they came from behind for a 51-41 win. The y were down 31 -21 at intermission and went on a 17-2 run in the third quarter. Chilhowie gets grounded

Chilhowie playing in a state championship game for the first time since 1970 got ran over by the Riverheads Gladiators 42-0 at Salem Field, Riverheads got two touchdowns from Dalton Jordan and Devin Morris each. Those two also rushed for over 100 yards each. Morris funished with 154 yards on 16 rushes and Jordan had 109 yards on 19 rushes.

Riverheads the defending state champs grounded out 331 yards rushing on 54 rushes. They scored twice in the first quarter once on a Morris 51 yards scamper and the other on a 14 yard jaunt from Jordan. The made it 21-0 with just nine seconds left before halftime on a six yard off tackle run from Morris. That run capped a 99 yard 12 play drive that put the Warroirs in a real bad spot.

The play off the game perhaps occurred at the Riverheads one yard line before the 99 yard drive. On the two yard line and third down Chilhowie quarterback Zack Cale sneaked behind his guard and looked to have a first down inside the one yard line. The officials marked the ball at the two and its was now fourth down and six inches , at most. Greg Sanchez would dive into the line and laid at the goal line. Time was called to measure to see if it was first down inside the one but after the ball was placed down the sticks were stretched and the ball was a couple inches short and the ball turned over to Riverheads. Those two plays turned the game around and instead of a 14-7 score, Riverheads drove and scored to go up 21-0 at halftime. The two spots were iffy and it took what momentum Chilhowie (11-4) away.

The second half saw the Gladiators Jordan score on a one yard plunge and then a blocked ount in the endzone was recovered by Zack Smiley and it was 35-0 after three quarters. Their last score came on a quarterback sneak from Tyler Smith with five minutes to play. That play occurred just three plays after a pass that was dropped for a touchdown by the Gladiators who were already 35-0 with less than seven minutes to go.

Chilhowie was held to 71 yards rushing on 40 carries. They finished with just 107 yards of total offense. Sancez led them with 25 yards rushing on nine carries. Chilhowie had only given up two 100 yard rushers in their 14 games this season but allowed two in the state title game.
