Cougars score last five points of game to defeat Blue Demons

Dublin…Seems like sometimes less is more. Such was the case Friday night in the Cougar Den. Playing without three of their top seven players, the Pulaski Co. Cougars battled and never gave up as they came from a 11 point deficit to pull out a come-from-behind 63-60 win over Christiansburg.

Down 60-58 with just over 30 seconds remaining in the contest, CC Grubb hit a driving shot to tie the game and on the inbounds pass, Trent Blankenship tapped the ball away. Grubb put up a five-foot jumper and was fouled. With 25 seconds to go, he proceeded to knock in the free throw and just like that he had scored five points in around eight seconds to put the Cougars (12-11) up as they advance to the River Ridge District semifinals. It was case of survive and advance for the Cougars.

Pulaski Co. got 28 points from senior Logan Robertson and 24 from senior CC Grubb. James Jackson, Kade Akers and Dre Grubb were all absent with the flu.

Christiansburg got 22 points from Austin Brown, 14 from D’Angelo Ruff and Cam Nagle chipped in with 12 points in a losing effort.

The first half saw the Blue Demons (6-16) up 16-15 after the opening quarter as Brown scored 10 of their 16 points. The Cougars would get a bucket from Robertson just before intermission to put them up 31-30 heading into the dressing room.

The third quarter saw the Blue demons take command of the game as they outscored the Cougars 22-12. Brown would hit five buckets and Trevor Howell hit two three-pointers in the period. Ten of Cougars’ 12 points in the third were from Grubb. They were down 50-39 late and the Demons took a 52-43 advantage into the start of the fourth quarter.

The Cougars Robertson would then get red hot at the right time as he personally hit eight straight points. He would then hit a jumper to tie the game at 58 with 1:45 remaining. He had scored 11 of their 13 points to help tie the game.

The Cougars finished up outscoring the Blue Demons 20-8 in the fourth period as they had come from behind to pick up the win. Cougar Head coach Andrew Hart said, “I don’t how we got all those points. It was like a blur.” He then remarked, “Logan and CC had to score tonight for us with three of our players out. They really stepped up. I used only six players the entire game and all five starters scored. We showed some want-to tonight with this comeback win.” He then added, “We played sloppy most of the game. We had 22 turnovers but most of those came before the last five minutes of the game.“

When asked about the three players out sick he said, “I don’t know if any of them will be able to play in the semifinal game or not. We brought up Luke Russell to help us from the junior varsity team in practice and for the game.”

The Cougars play number one seed Hidden Valley in one of the district semifinal games.

Pulaski Co. also learned that next Friday, Feb. 16, they’ll travel to Forest, Va. to play Jefferson Forest in the opening round of the Region 4D playoffs.

NRV Tigers 17U player commits

The New River Valley Tigers 17U travel baseball team had another one of their players to commit to further his baseball playing days and his education. Logan Altizer has committed to UVA-Wise. He will be joined there by fellow NRV Tiger player Jacob Stuart. Altizer, who plays for Cave Spring High School, had a batting average of.400 this past summer. He had one home run and knocked in 14. He had 10 stolen bases and had a .487 on-base percentage. Tiger head coach Todd Davis remarked, “Logan was a great teammate to the guys.
