Radford wins first round of the playoffs

Radford…Playing on a Thursday night due to the weather forecast, the Radford Bobcats got defensive in the opening round of the Class 2 Region C playoffs.

The Bobcats got three touchdowns from P J Prioleau, and their defense shut down the Fort Chiswell Pioneers on their way to a 22-0 win.

Prioleau rushed for 171 yards on 22 carries. He scored on runs of 1, 13 and 16 yards.

After a scoreless first quarter, Radford finally put together a 12-play, 97-yard drive that was capped off by Prioleau’s 16-yard touchdown run. The point after was wide leaving the Bobcats up 6-0 with 2:48 before halftime. The score came after their defense had held the Fort Chiswell Pioneers on downs at the Radford three-yard line.

Fort Chiswell (5-6) had first down at the Bobcat five but could only gain three yards on three plays. Then on fourth and goal at the two, QB Brody Crockett was thrown a one-yard loss for a big momentum swing.

Then after a scoreless third quarter in which the Bobcats held the Pioneers to just 17 yards of total offense, Radford scored as Prioleau weaved his way in from 13 yards out, but their two-point conversion was no good. They would hold the Pioneers to three plays and out. They would then drive the ball to the 12 yard line but on three incomplete passes, Connor Lytton would hit a 29-yard field goal for a 15-0 score with 6:38 remaining.

Radford (10-1) would put the game away on their next possession. They capped off by a one-yard run from Prioleau with 3:49 left in the game. Bobcat quarterback sophomore Zane Rupe rushed for 40 yards and threw for 51 more. Justice Marshall caught three passes for 30 yards. “Our defense came up big again tonight,“ said Bobcat head coach Matthew Saunders. “I thought Fort Chiswell had a heck of a game plan, and they executed it very well.” When asked about stopping the Pioneers down at the goal line in the second quarter, Coach Saunders replied, ”The goal line stand was a big momentum turn before halftime. We not only stopped them, but we th drove the ball and finished it off by scoring before half. We talked to the players this week that we needed to be mentally tough. It was a short week and coming off a big emotional win last week. We survived and move on.”

Fort Chiswell head coach Josh Wingate said, ”When you get down to the opponents five-yard line, you got to score. They were a big stop there. Once again tonight, we would drive the ball then stall out. We did that way too much this season. They (Radford) are a very good team.”

The win was Radford’s ninth in a row and will move them on to the region semifinal next week. The loss brings an end to the Fort Chiswell season.

Fort Chiswell win takes them to playoffs

Bastian….The Pioneers traveled to Bland Co. and came away with a 29-7 victory over the Bears. The win stopped a two-game losing streak and also assured them of making the playoffs.

Fort Chiswell (5-5, 3-3) got 153 yards rushing from senior quarterback Brody Crockett and three rushing touchdowns on 30 carries. Isaac “Bevo” Dunford had 106 yards on nine carries, and Dylan Bailey rushed seven times for 105 yards.

The ball control and time-consuming drives helped the Pioneers to the win on a wet, muddy field. Their defense limited the Bears to less than 100 yards of offense.

They scored in the first quarter as Crockett capped the drive off with a two-yard quarterback sneak, and Jacob Turpin’s kick put them up 7-0 with 3:51 remaining. The Pioneers would score again at the 8:47 mark of the second quarter as Crockett again ran in from two yards out for a 14-0 lead, a lead that they took into intermission.

On their second possession of the third, they again would get a touchdown from Crockett when he ran in from three yards out. He also would get the two-point conversion run for a 22-0 score.

Bland Co. would get their lone score of the night on their next possession when running back Samuel Bright rammed his way in from three yards out. Ethan Buchanan would kick the point after making the score 22-7 with 5:38 left in the quarter.

The Pioneers would hit pay dirt one more time with six minutes to go in the game. This time sophomore Dylan Bailey would break loose for a 30-yard scamper for six, and Turpin’s kick made the final 29-7.

“We played well tonight,” said Fort Chiswell head coach Josh Wingate, who had just become a father for the first time this week. “Proud of how the coaches and players handled things this week; it’s been rather hectic.”

The win moved the Pioneers into Class 2 Region C playoffs. They will travel to Radford to take on the number one seed Bobcats (unofficially as of this writing). The two teams met back on September 7 in Radford, with Radford coming out on top 26-6. The rematch from the regular season will kick off at 7:00 pm Friday at Bobcat Stadium.
