Former Auburn High School baseball player Keith Reed has decided to further his education and baseball career at Concord University. Reed helped Auburn to a state championship this past spring and is playing for the NRV Tigers 18U showcase team this summer. Congrats to Keith and his family.
The New River Valley Tigers 18U showcase baseball team won all three of their games this past weekend. Playing in Tennessee they won 1-0, 7-3, and 8-3.
Their first game saw pitcher Sean Gibbons throw a two-hit complete-game shutout. The Tigers scored their lone run in the bottom of the seventh as Andrew Neighbors tripled and scored on a Caleb Pritchard walk-off single to beat the East Tn. Fury.
The Tigers would then defeat Hard Knox Orioles 7-3 Saturday afternoon, as pitcher Shawn Campbell went seven innings. He allowed all three runs in the first inning before he settled down on the mound. He struck out eight and allowed just five hits for the win. Pulaski Co. Cougars’ Punky Foster had a double to knock in two runs.
On Sunday the Tigers took on Travel East Tn. Elite and won 8-3 behind the pitching of Taylor Newcome. Newcome went four innings struck out three and allowed five hits and three runs. Foster would pitch an inning and strike out one. Carter Plunkett would also pitch one inning. Newcome would help himself as he scored two runs. Punky Foster would score two runs, as well.
Tigers head man Todd Davis said, ” We got great pitching this weekend. Gibbons ( Sean), Campbell ( Shawn), and Taylor Newcome. I thought Punky Foster, Andrew Neighbors, Carter Plunkett, Caleb Pritchard, Leighton Dunford, as well as Campbell and Newcome all hit the ball.” He then added, ” Logan Burchette, Cam Upton also came through in big situations. The whole team played extremely well.”
The Tigers were led in hits by Carter Plunkett and Shawn Campbell with three each. Logan Burchette, Leighton Dunford, Punky Foster, Caleb Pritchard, and Andrew Neighbors all had two hits apiece. Neighbors scored four runs as Taylor Newcome had three. Shawn Campbell and Punky Foster scored twice. Campbell, Plunkett, Pritchard all knocked in three runs apiece. Foster and Cam Upton had two RBI.
The Tigers with their three wins are now 11-4-1 on the summer and will travel to Lynchburg ,August 2-4. Games will be played at Liberty University.

Blacksburg/ Vinton… NRV Tigers won three of four games this weekend. They won their Friday game 8-4 over Richmond Braves. Saturday morning they would lose to Va. Seminoles 3-1 but bounced back Saturday afternoon defeating the Bobcats of NOVA, 8-2.
Sunday they would shutout the RBA Seminoles 7-0. Taylor Newcome and Shawn Campbell combined to throw a two-hitter as Newcome got the victory. The two pitchers combined to strike out seven in six innings.
The Tigers won Friday as Pulaski Co. Cougar Punky Foster drove in two huge runs, scored a run and he also got the mound win. He pitched two innings giving up no earned runs, allowed only one hit and struck out two. Saturday after their 3-1 loss their bats came alive as Carter Plunkett hit two homers, knocking in three and scored three times behind the pitching of Fort Chiswell Pioneer Leighton Dunford. Dunford tossed four frames striking out four.
The weekend saw a lot of Tigers performed very well. Plunkett hit two homers as he finished the weekend seven for 11 at the plate. He drove in six and scored six runs. Newcome scored three runs and had three RBI. Caleb Pritchard and Cougars Punky Foster also had three RBI. Dunford, Foster and Brody Luckey picked up wins on the mound. Carroll Co. Cavaliers Blake Stanley had five hits in eight at-bats. Foster went four for nine, Pritchard four for 10, Auburn’s Keith Reed was three for six as Newcome also had three hits in seven at-bats for the weekend.
Tigers head coach Todd Davis remarked, ” I thought we got some very good pitching from Newcome, Dunford, Foster, Campbell, and Luckey. Our bats for the most part produced. Plunkett, Pritchard, Newcome, Stanley, Reed and Foster came through at different times for us.”
NRV Tigers improved to 8-4-1 on their summer tour overall and will now travel to Sevierville, Tennessee for July 19-21.
The NRV Tigers 18U showcase baseball team played their first two games this weekend ( July12-14) at Va. Tech baseball field. An organization called D1Draftable was in charge of running the games. I’ve been covering sports for around 16 years. I have never been treated so rudely as I was Saturday morning at Va. Tech by D1 draftable organization. I not only was told I couldn’t cover the game but later the girl at the gate admission, just flat out LIED on me. I have never seen anyone never accept a press pass/credentials in my lifetime. Then to be as rude as the girl, was horrible. The D1 draftable people should be ashamed at what occurred at Va. Tech. D1 draftable owe some people some apologies. I wonder if they treat the people in around Petersburg that way? So tell coaches and baseball summer team managers if D1 draftable is involved you best think twice before you play.

Dublin… Well, sports fans another school year of sports have come and gone. I first need to thank some people for their help for the past sports year. I will say Thank You to Fort Chiswell Pioneer athletic director Jeff Molinary and principal Dyer Jackson. I truly appreciate all your help and info. Thank you to Fort Chiswell coach Josh Wingate and his football staff. You all were put in a difficult position last August. Proud of how you all handled it and the work that was put in. I also thank Fort Chiswell head basketball and baseball coach Derrick Jackson and his two staffs. I appreciate the time and friendship. Fort Chiswell will have a new football head coach and it will be their third football coach in three years. In fact, their fourth in six years. That kind of turnover is very hard. Continuity is important and the kids have to learn different techniques and styles. Here’s hoping new coach Chris Akers the very best on the upcoming football season. Chris Hanks Thank You for your help. One last thing about Fort Chiswell, Tina Quesenberry I appreciate your friendship and all that you do.
I want to say Thank You to Radford Bobcat athletic director Greg Wade. Jeff Smith, Darden Freeman, and Ken Keister your alls friendship is appreciated. Mike Roop, Shane Roop, Doug Kanipe, and Wayne Pridgen Thank you all. The Bobcat football team this past year won 12 games and played in the state championship game. They had 10 game improvement from their previous season. Head Coach Matthew Sauders and his entire staff, Thank you for putting up with me during practice and games. Rick Cormany and his entire Radford basketball staff congrats on winning another state championship. Undefeated seasons very difficult to have. Betty the scorekeeper very nice to work with you. Radford baseball coach Drew Cox, it will get better. Hang in and keep working.
This brings me to Pulaski Co. Cougars. Cougar boys basketball Coach Andrew Hart and your staff you will be missed. Five years went by fast. Sorry to see you leave and here’s hoping you much success at Lord Botetourt , Andrew. It was a difficult and long basketball season. Lost two starters due to transferring. The team played hard, it just wasn’t the most talented squad. New head coach Tyler Cannoy wishing you the best of luck and your new staff. Got lots of work to do. Hope lots of players come out this winter. JV squad had a winning season, hopefully, they will improve as they are to step up to varsity. Athletic director Scott Vest I appreciate all the information and your help. Good luck to football coach Stephen James and his staff. Keep up the great work. Pulaski Co. baseball head coach Greg Allen and his staff also had a very roller coaster, difficult season. It was a young team. Only six seniors, of which only a couple of them having game experience. The team had something like 90 errors in 19 games. You couple that with all the walks, and it made for a long season. The junior varsity hopefully will help on the varsity next season. Lot of work to be done in baseball, too.
Congrats to the Auburn Eagles baseball team winning the state championship and all of their teams for state titles, that was won by the Eagles. Doug Reed, you hang in there and you also Scott Grantham, my friends. Danny Shouse, Greg Ridpath you are missed.
I also want to say, Thank you to all my referee and officials that I work with. You get more right, by far. Don’t always agree but that’s human nature, lol. I truly enjoyed doing the state semifinal baseball games that were played at Calfee Park and couple playoff basketball games that were played at Pulaski Co. High School.
One final thing to say is his; I have this website and do this for fun cause I enjoy sports. I don’t charge a penny for any of the content on it. It is becoming expensive to maintain, though. Johnson City, TN… The NRV Tigers 18U summer travel baseball squad won two games, lost one and tied one this past weekend. The games were part of East Tenn. St. showcase.
The Tigers got off to slow start as they lost Friday to the Tenn. Longhorns 4-1. The Tigers got a good performance on the mound by Auburn’s Taylor Newcome but their bats didn’t perform, as they left 12 men on base and only had three hits.
Saturday the Tigers got on the winning track as they beat the Morristown Senators 7-0. Brody Luckey got the pitching win as he tossed three innings and allowed just two hits. Fort Chiswell’s Leighton Dunford then pitched three innings and he didn’t give up any hits. Newcome knocked in three, Shawn Campbell had two RBI, as Nick Funk and Carter Plunkett had RBI each.
The Tigers would face the Known New Balance team. New Balance hadn’t given a run in their first two games, as well as hadn’t allowed a hit. The Tigers found themselves up 5-3 but a couple of errors allowed New Balance to tie the game in their last at-bat as the time limit ended the game in a tie.
Newcome once again pitched extremely well, going four innings. Campbell had three runs knocked in. Plunkett had an RBI as well as Pulaski Co. Cougar Logan Burchett.
The last game the Tigers played was on Sunday as they handled Tir-Cities Titans 6-5. Nick Funk scored twice and Campbell once in the victory. Funk and Campbell both scored runs. Grayson Co.’s Campbell got the win on the mound as he tossed three innings.
NRV Tigers head coach Todd Davis remarked, “We started slowly Friday. Our bats left to many guys on base. I thought Newcome (Taylor), Campbell( Shawn), Luckey( Brody) and Dunford ( Leighton) pitched well for us this weekend.” Davis then said, ” We played some very talented teams here. The New Balance team hadn’t allowed a run or hit in their first two games. Campbell, Newcome, and Funk had some good productive at-bats for us.”
Taylor Newcome, Shawn Campbell both had four hits and Nick Funk three in leading the Tigers. Campbell had six RBI, and Newcome three. Funk scored five runs and Campbell three for the weekend.
The Tigers will be back in action July 12-14 as they play at Va.Tech. Game times haven’t been announced as of now.
