Pioneers defeat G-men

Bluefield…Sometimes you win and don’t play well. That was the Fort Chiswell Pioneers as they defeated the Graham G-men 12-10 in Bluefield.

The Pioneers had to come from behind as they fell behind 6-0 after the first inning. They would answer with five runs of their own in the top of the second to make it 6-5 and then would score three runs to go ahead 8-6 after three innings. They would cross the plate four more times in the top of the fourth and Graham would also score four in their half of the fourth.

Fort Chiswell would then put Dallas Beasley on the mound, and he proceeded to strike out four in the next two innings to save the game for Chance Davis and the Pioneers. It was a sloppy played game for both squads with 11 walks, eight errors and eight hit batsmen.

Graham pitchers had trouble finding the strike zone as they walked six and hit seven Pioneer batters. Howie Spencer had two hits and knocked in two for the losing G-men. Ben Meade also scored twice and he was also the losing pitcher, going 4.1 innings.

Davis led the Pioneers (2-0) offensively with three hits and RBIs. He came into pitch with just one out and went 3.1 innings striking out four. Tanner Bailey scored twice as did Beasley, Sean Morgan and Konner Rotenizer. Codey Burkes led the Pioneers with three runs scored.

Fort Chiswell head coach Derrick Jackson said, “ We got 10 of our runs scored by the five -nine batters tonight. We got to field the ball better than what we have the first two games.“ Coach then remarked, ”I’m happy with the way Davis (Chance) and Beasley (Dallas) performed on the mound. They saved us again tonight. I’m not happy with how we are playing defensively.”

The Pioneers will play their home opener Friday against Radford. The first pitch is slated for 5 pm.

Cougar baseball opens with a loss

Forest…”Play ball!” The Pulaski Co. Cougar baseball team finally heard those words as they traveled to Jefferson Forest to take on the Cavaliers. Last week the Cougars had not one, not two, but three games postponed due to the weather.

With that in mind the Jefferson Forest team had played and they got stout pitching as they defeated the Cougars 3-0. Charlie Toman led them with two hits, and he knocked in a run. The key hit of game was by Cody Whitten as he stroked a two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the second after two errors by the Cougars. Griffen Wooldridge had two hits and Colin Robinson scored twice.

The only hit by Pulaski Co. was by Hunter Shrewsbury in the top of the second with one out. The game turned into a pitching duel as Cougar starter Thomas Anderson went four innings, striking out five and giving up just four hits and no earned runs. The only other Cougars to reach base were Andrew Lowe on a base on balls, Jon Osteen by way of an error, Tyler Waddell by way of an error and Kam Hall walked.

Cougar head coach Jared King said, ”Thomas Anderson threw four great innings for us today. I’m proud of how our four pitchers threw.” He then added, ”We’ve got to find some production offensively. Jefferson Forest, give them credit. Their pitchers kept us off balance. The two pitchers for them today have very live arms.“

The Cougars are back on the road Wednesday as they travel to Glenvar. First pitch is slated for 5 pm, weather permitting.

Pioneers defeat Bobcats in season opener

Radford…On a cool, cloudy and misting rain evening the Fort Chiswell Pioneers defeated the Radford Bobcats 5-3 in the opener for both squads.

The main offense for the Pioneers was walks and a couple of hit batters. They scored twice in the top of first without a hit. Tanner Bailey, Codey Burkes, Jacob Coake all drew base on balls and then a pitch to score Bailey hit Leighton Dunford. Sean Morgan then walked to score Burkes with one out.

Fort Chiswell would expand their lead to 4-0 in the top of the third as Chance Davis doubled. Coake and Morgan both walked to load the bases. Aaron Crawford then singled to knock in both Davis and Coake.

Radford would get one run back in the bottom of the their third as Ty Hamblin singled and scored on a Conner Phillips single.

The Pioneers would answer with a single run in the top of the fourth when Bailey walked, moved to second on a ground out, and later scored on a Davis ground out to take a 5-1 lead.

Radford would battle back with a run in the bottom of the fifth as Hamblin singled and scored on an error with two outs. They would then score again in the sixth as Taylor Newcomer would single to lead the inning off and scored on another Pioneer error. Radford would have the tying runs on, but couldn’t get them in as the game ended.

Radford head coach Greg Ridpath said, ”We walked too many batters. We didn’t play and need to straighten all of that out.”

Fort Chiswell coach Derrick Jackson remarked, ”We didn’t knock the cover off the ball. We made too many mistakes and we need to improve.”

Fort Chiswell will play Tuesday at Graham and Radford will be home Wednesday against Craig Co.
