Pioneers defeat G-men

Bluefield…Sometimes you win and don’t play well. That was the Fort Chiswell Pioneers as they defeated the Graham G-men 12-10 in Bluefield.

The Pioneers had to come from behind as they fell behind 6-0 after the first inning. They would answer with five runs of their own in the top of the second to make it 6-5 and then would score three runs to go ahead 8-6 after three innings. They would cross the plate four more times in the top of the fourth and Graham would also score four in their half of the fourth.

Fort Chiswell would then put Dallas Beasley on the mound, and he proceeded to strike out four in the next two innings to save the game for Chance Davis and the Pioneers. It was a sloppy played game for both squads with 11 walks, eight errors and eight hit batsmen.

Graham pitchers had trouble finding the strike zone as they walked six and hit seven Pioneer batters. Howie Spencer had two hits and knocked in two for the losing G-men. Ben Meade also scored twice and he was also the losing pitcher, going 4.1 innings.

Davis led the Pioneers (2-0) offensively with three hits and RBIs. He came into pitch with just one out and went 3.1 innings striking out four. Tanner Bailey scored twice as did Beasley, Sean Morgan and Konner Rotenizer. Codey Burkes led the Pioneers with three runs scored.

Fort Chiswell head coach Derrick Jackson said, “ We got 10 of our runs scored by the five -nine batters tonight. We got to field the ball better than what we have the first two games.“ Coach then remarked, ”I’m happy with the way Davis (Chance) and Beasley (Dallas) performed on the mound. They saved us again tonight. I’m not happy with how we are playing defensively.”

The Pioneers will play their home opener Friday against Radford. The first pitch is slated for 5 pm.
