Richlands looking for new coach

The Richlands Blue Tornado is looking for a new football coach. Greg Mance has stepped down and has accepted the head football job at Loris High School in South Carolina. Loris is about 30 miles from Myrtle Beach. Mance had been the head coach at Richlands since 1997 and his teams won 205 games.

Cougars lose in district semi-finals

Pulaski Co. boys lost to regular-season champion Patrick Henry Patriots 72-53 in the River Ridge District Tournament semi-finals. The game was held at Hidden Valley High School in the first of two semi-final games. The second game saw Cave Spring hit a last-second shot to beat Salem 68-66.

” We seemed to be sleepwalking the first half,” said Cougar Head Coach Tyler Cannoy. The second quarter was the Cougar’s downfall as they got outscored 20-6. The Cougars had more turnovers in the second period eight to points scored, six. Coach Cannoy remarked, ” Hats off to Patrick Henry. They are well-coached and have a lot of athletes that are very good. There is a reason why they went undefeated in the regular season. They have the total package, quick, strong, shoot well and, attack the glass.”

Pulaski Co. will now play Halifax Co. in Class 4 Region D playoffs. That game is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 21 at 7:00 pm at Halifax Co. High School.

Cavaliers name new coach

Carroll Co. High School has named Monty Chipman as their new head football coach. Chipman was head coach this past season at North Wilkes, NC High School. He has been the head coach at North Wilkes since 2012. Before they hired him they had won just five games in the last five years, before he arrived. He has won over 50 games since he became their coach. He ran the “Air Raid” offense at North Wilkes. One of his assistant coaches there was David Meredith – aka Murdock, this past season. Chipman was also the head coach at East Wilkes( NC) before coming to North Wilkes (NC).

Cougar head coach Tyler Cannoy said,” They Patrick Henry are extremely athletic and physical and we have trouble matching up with them.” The Cougar third quarter was their downfall as they scored just five points and committed seven turnovers. A seven-point halftime deficit turned into a 20 point deficit going to the final quarter.
