Fort Chiswell Middle School splits scrimmages

The Fort Chiswell Pioneers Middle School played Giles in the first of two scrimmages that was held at Pulaski Co. High School and lost in the last minute of play.

Giles scored on a 1 yard plunge from Chris Via and Zack Brightwell ran in the two-point conversion to beat the Pioneers 14-6. Fort Chiswell score came on a 45 yard pass play to Camden Gravely from QB Siler Watson . The score tied the game at 6 with 3:20 remaining in the contest.

Their second contest saw the young Pioneers defeat Read Mountain 24-6. Tyler Crigger took handoff from eight yards out to put them up 6-0. Then just two minutes later Levi Groseclose ran in from the five yard line to up their lead to 12-0. The next quarter then saw them get a six yard run from Ezra Varney but again the conversion was no good but it was a 18-0 score .

Read Mountain got on the board with a 40 yard run with just under three minutes to go by Jack McDaniel. The Pioneers would answer that as Camden Gravely took the hand-off came around the left end and down the Fort Chiswell sideline enroute to a 70 yard scamper for the finally score .

“We didn’t play well in our first scrimmage. At worse we should have tied but we got out of position there, it cost us a long run that led to their last score, said Pioneer coach Danny Dunford. Coach Dunford then said,” Our effort was better the second game and I’m more pleased about the day.”
