Honaker , Virginia High both lose in State Championship games

Playing on a sunny Saturday for a state championship the Honaker Tigers were on the wrong side of a 13-1 score against the Gladiators of Riverheads. Riverheads ( 19-5) scored two runs in the first and then sent 11 batters to the plate in the second that produced eight more runs. Elijah Dunlap went the distance as he tossed a five-hitter against the Tigers. He walked just one and struck out five. He gave up one run that was unearned as Riverheads won the Class 1 State Championship. Grant Painter had a triple , two singles , scored twice and knocked in five runs. Dunlap helped himself with two hits , a walk and scored a run. Forrest Shuey and Jakob King both had two RBIs each. Honaker ( 21-6) scored their only run in the second inning to cut their deficit to one , 2-1 as Hartley Hilton singled and later scored on an error. Chris Marshall was tagged with the loss as he went 4.2 innings as he had control troubles, walking seven. Besides Hilton’s hit , Chase Miller , Blake Stinson, Jacob Compton and Levi Miller had a hit each.

In the Class 2 final Page Co. ( 27-1) won an exciting 5-4 game over Virginia High. Freshman southpaw pitcher T.R. Williams went all seven innings, gave up six hits. He walked just one and struck out five and had a no-hitter after four . He also scored knocked in a run, with a single in the second inning. The Panthers scored four times in the second as Nate Lucas knocked in Josh Good, Chase Combs singled in Lucas. Noah Hammer then scored on Williams hit and Tristan Eppard groundout scored Freddie Stidham. Combs had a single and double knocking in two. Williams, Eppard and Lucas all had an RBI each.

Virginia High ( 20-8) battled and fought back being down 4-0 going into the fifth. They would score twice and then cut the deficit to one 4-3 in the sixth. Down 5-3 and two-outs in the seventh they got a triple from Michael Bradley and he would score on a wild pitch. Then lead-off man Bobby Medley, would single . With the tying run on Jordan Dixon came to the plate but would hit into a fielder’s choice to end the game. Jamie Lathrop knocked in two runs in the fifth but as he was trying to score he got ejected by the home plate umpire for plowing into the Panther catcher for the third out. Zach Griffiths had the other Bearcat run. Dixon was tagged with the loss as he went five innings as he surrendered seven hits ,five runs , three earned, walked two and struck out two.

Honaker – 1 run , 5 hits , 1 error , 5 LOB
