The Narrows Green Wave won their eighth straight game as they shut out the Covington cougars 21-0 to advance to next weeks Region C Championship . The Green Wave set the tone on their very first drive as they went 66 yards on 16 plays that took 6:16 of the opening quarter. They scored on Mikey McKinney one yard plunge and Matthew Morgan point after made the score 7-0.
Covington took kick off and drove the ball only to fumble the ball away and the scenario of the game had been set. The Cougars ended up with six turnovers. They had three fumbles and threw three interceptions.
The second quarter saw the Green Wave go up 14-0 on a Chase Blaker touchdown catch of 31 yards from Wyatt Freeman with 4:56 to go before intermission.
The third quarter saw Narrows ( 11-1) score again this time on a Freeman to Gavin Pruitt 21 yard pass on slant in route for a 21-0 lead. The Green Wave defense would finished off the shut out with an interception late in the fourth quarter. Their defense had shut out the Cougars and now have four shut outs in their 12 games. ” Our defense played great tonight, ” said a elated Narrows head coach Kelly Lowe. ” That opening drive was very important as we got them down and kind of set the tone for the game. The Covington quarterback ( Moore) is an explosive player and I thought we were real physical with them tonight.Hey they had scored over 35 points a game in their last five or six games. I just can’t thank the defense enough for the job they done”
Narrows has now won 11 games on the season and it’s the first time since 1978 since they had done that. Mikey McKinney had 47 yards on 16 rushes and Chase Kantsios had 34 yards on five carries. Quarterback Wyatt Freeman completed 6 of 12 passes , threw two touchdowns for 80 yards.
Covington ( 8-4 ) lost for the second time to Narrows as they lost to them in the regular season 46-18 back on October 6. KJ Moore was held to just 14 yards rushing and threw three interceptions. Kent Bullock led them in rushing with 58 yards on 11 carries.
Narrows will now play for the Region C Championship next Saturday against Galax. The game will be at 2:00 pm at Ragsdale Field in Narrows.
