Pioneers big inning leads to win

Playing on an overcast and threating sky the Fort Chiswell Pioneers tallied eight runs in the second inning as they slammed Glenvar 13-7 in a Region 2-C baseball quarterfinal game. The Bailey boys of Fort Chiswell knocked in six runs, scored five runs and had four hits. Freshman Dylan hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to get the Pioneers on the scoreboard in the first. They would then send 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the second scoring eight runs to go up 10-0. After giving up a Glenvar run in the third, Fort Chiswell ( 15-4) pushed three more runs up to go up 13-1 after three innings. Dylan was two for four, three RBIs, three runs scored and drew a walk. Senior Tanner was two for four, three RBIs and scored twice.

Chance Davis rounding third heading home to score

Leighton Dunford went the first 2.2 innings striking out five and surrendered only one unearned run. He and then Chance Davis both were on pitch counts for they both can come back Wednesday in the region semifinal game.

Glenvar starting pitcher, Cody Alexander was tagged with the loss as he pitched two innings giving up two runs, four hits and walked two. Six different Highlander players knocked in a run. Justin Forster scored two runs. Four of the Glenvar ( 12-8-1) players had two hits, apiece.

Seven of the nine Pioneer starters got at least one hit, Beside the two Bailey’s, Chance Davis had two RBIs, as did Justin Porter and Sean Morgan. ” We got off to a great start, Said Pioneer head coach Derrick Jackson. ” We hit the ball really well and the big start helped our pitching decisions and the pitch counts.” The Pioneers will now play the Chatham Cavaliers, Wednesday at Kiwanis Field in Salem. First pitch is slated for 4:00 pm.
