Pioneers come up short in Regional semifinal

Playing a day later after rain forced the game to be suspended the Chatham Cavaliers defeated the Fort Chiswell Pioneers 4-2. The loss means the Pioneers season comes to an end. Chatham will now move on to the regional finals and next week’s state quarterfinals.

With the game tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth the rain suspended the game and the two teams had to come back to Kiwanis Field in Salem. With a runner on second and no outs from the day before, Hunter Adkins ground out moved Andrew Potojecki to third and he then scored on a sac fly by Brae Adkins to put the Cavaliers up 3-2. They would then push another run across in the fifth inning as Grayson Reed would double off the left -centerfield wall. He would moved to third on a single by Jake Waters and scored on fielder’s choice by Potojecki.

Chatham ( 19-2) got two hits and two RBIs from Waters and relief pitcher Christian Lancaster would go three innings and gave up no hits. He struck out two and faced just 10 batters in the three innings. Winning pitcher Andrew Potojecki got the win but didn’t threw a pitch on the day.

Fort Chiswell (15-5) got just four hits in the game all coming before the suspension. Aaron Crawford has two of them , as Dylan Bailey and older brother Tanner had a hit apiece. Dylan and Chance Davis both scored a run. Tanner had one RBI fin the losing effort. Leighton Dunford whom started the game the day before, was responsible for the runner on second that scored to put Chatham in front. The Concord University bound senior struck out three and walked two.

” It’s a tough loss for us no doubt ,” said a disappointed Pioneer head coach Derrick Jackson. We seemd to have the momentum yesterday but today they made the plays and we didn’t. That’s the game of baseball.” Coach then remarked, My seniors will be missed. I’m so proud of how hard they have worked and contributed to this program.”
