Another Cougar comeback defeats the Bruins

Dublin…Coming off the biggest comeback in school history the Cougars would come from behind, this time from 19, to defeat the Blacksburg Bruins 94-85 behind junior guard C C Grubbs pouring in a career high 42 points. Grubb hit 10 3-pointers, four 2’s and was four of four from the free throw line. He did all this in three quarters, as he was scoreless after the opening quarter. Cougars also got 19 from Bryant Grubb and 18 from Logan Robertson.

Blacksburg came out knocking down shot after shot and went up 31-17 and took a 54-39 advantage into halftime. The Cougars found themselves down 31-13 until they scored the last points in the first quarter. The Bruins (10-8) were led in scoring by Antonio Houston’s 20 points as he hit four shots from behind the three point arc. Semi Cianelli had 18, Grant Johnston 16 and Jacob Verbrugge tossed in 15 for the Bruins.

The Cougars, down 15, came out firing in the third quarter after their coach drew a technical just before halftime. They scored 33 points in the third with CC Grubb knocking in 19 and older brother scoring seven to pull the Cougars to within two, 74-72 going into the final stanza.

They would then double up the Bruins 22-11 in the final quarter, as C C would produce nine more points. Bryan Roberson’s jumper with 5:19 remaining would put the Cougars on top 76-74 and C C would score six straight points for the comeback Cougars.

“We did it again tonight, didn’t we, ”said Cougar head coach Andrew Hart. “What a fantastic basketball game this was and what can you say about C C’s performance. This was a huge win for us. We made shots in the second half and we slowed them down just enough to win. My guys battled again tonight and we responded when we were down.”

The Cougars (12-7) hit 17 three-pointers in the game and outscored the Bruins 55- 31 in the second half to once again came from double figures down to win.

In the junior varsity contest the Cougars got 19 points from James Jackson and 12 from Dre Grubb to beat the Bruins 64-43. Julian Black produced 11 points in the victory. Cole Epperley led the Bruins with 15 points.

Pulaski Co. will travel to Roanoke Friday night as they take on the Cave Spring Knights. Junior varsity starts at 5:30 and the variety at around 7 pm.
