Cougars win, gets eighth seed in region

The Cougars got 32 points from their reserves as they went on to defeat Alleghany Mountaineers 73-61. Hayden Gray knocked down four three’s as he finished with 16 points. Benjamin Poe dropped in 15 and Justin Roberson chipped in with 11.

Alleghany got 11 points from Jayson Easton. Triston Hensley and Christian Allen both had nine points apiece.

The Cougars had a game against Lord Botetourt that wasn’t made-up and Region D gave them permission to play that 22nd game. Alleghany had a game also that wasn’t made up so the two teams got to play. Both teams started slowly with the Cougars holding an 11-8 edge after the first quarter. They would extend that to nine at intermission, going up 28-19.

Both teams got more into their groove in the third as both scored 19 points each. The Cougars would hit 10 of 14 free throws down the stretch to win the game. ” After a week off and a long trip here tonight, I thought we played well, said Cougar head coach Andrew Hart. ” We were pretty consistent for the game and lot of different guys stepped up.”

The Cougars ( 8-15) with the win earned the eighth-place seed. They get the seed over Carroll Co. as they beat the Cavaliers head to head, both times. Lord Botetourt wasn’t able to make the game up with Cougars, as Region D voted to give the Cougars permission to play this game.
