Fort Chiswell Pioneers to host Tournament

Max Meadows… Eight teams, four games a day for three days. That’s what will be coming to Fort Chiswell High School starting Monday December 28.

It’s called the First Bank of Virginia Christmas Tournament and the Pioneers of Fort Chiswell High School is the host school.

Johnson Co. (TN.), Alleghany (NC), Radford, Grayson Co., Carroll Co., Floyd Co., Twin Valley and Fort Chiswell will be the eight schools that will be participating in this years tourney. It all gets started Monday at 4 pm.

The first game will feature the Carroll Co. Cavaliers (1-2) under the direction of head coach Brad Hawks taking on the Longhorns of Johnson Co (TN). The Longhorns are from Mountain City, Tennessee and come into the tournament with a record of 1-4 and are coached by Austin Atwood. The 5:30 contest will see Floyd Co. Buffaloes take on the Trojans of Alleghany (NC). The Trojans are from Sparta, North Carolina and are 4-3 on the season. They played in last year’s tourney, and they play a very competitive brand of basketball under head coach Tom McKnight. Floyd Co. has a record of 3-3 and are coached by Brian Harman. They like to get up and down the court.

The other first round games will pit the Radford Bobcats (2-1) versus the Panthers of Twin Valley. The Panthers who are 3-1 on the early season, are coached by Matt Baldwin and are from Pilgrims Knob, Virginia. The nightcap of the opening round will see the Grayson Co. Blue Devils go up against Fort Chiswell.

Fort Chiswell is 5-2, coached by Derrick Jackson and Grayson Co. is off to a slow start at 0-7 and have a new coach, Mike Butler

Bryson Booher and junior Colby Rider lead the Pioneers. Boomer just signed to play baseball at Concord.

Admission for the tournament is $6 per day, concessions are provided and, from this sports writer, are very good.

Tuesday’s action will start back up at 4pm as well as Wednesday’s. Wednesday will see the seventh place game at 4, Fifth place at 5:30, third place game at 7 and the championship will be at around 8:30 that night.

It’s competitive, exciting basketball and lots of fun for teams and fans.
