Max Meadows…Playing perhaps their best half of basketball of the season in the first half, the Pioneers held on down the stretch to upset the Chilhowie Warriors 78-71.

Noah Widelo

The Pioneers placed six players into double figures to improve their record to 9-5. They were led in scoring by Noah Widelo with 14 points coming off the bench. He got lots of help as Andrew Stoots had 12, Kolton Sutphin 11 and Isaiah Ramsey 11. Tanner Bailey and Matthew Musick both had 10 point apiece.

Chilhowie (13-3) got a game high 27 points from forward Cameron Kestner and Alex Delp finished with 18. He scored 12 of those in the third quarter as the Warriors battled back from 18 down to close to within three 74-71 with 48 seconds to go in the game. Trevor Tucker pumped in 12 in the loss for the Warriors.

The Pioneers came out smoking as they knocked four three’s in the opening quarter for a 24-14 advantage. They would take a 42-28 lead into the locker room at intermission as they had 16 field goals in the first half.

The Warriors would slowly but surely cut into the Pioneers lead as Delp would score 12 straight points in the third quarter and then Kestner would produce 13 points in the final period.

Andrew Stoots

Fort Chiswell hit six huge free throws in the last thirty seconds to put the game in the win column. ‘We played real well the first half,” said Pioneers head man Derrick Jackson. “We were unselfish tonight. I’m very proud of the guys and their effort. This is a big win for us.”

The game saw 70 foul shots with 48 fouls called. The Pioneers shot 32 and Chilhowie 38 free throws.

The Pioneer junior varsity dropped a 42-29 decision to the young Warriors. The Warriors were led in scoring by Jason Amaro’s 11 points. Fort Chiswell got nine points from Isaac McHone and seven from Leighton Dunford.

Fort Chiswell travels to Grayson Co. Tonight, with the junior varsity tipping at 5:30 and varsity following.
