Pioneers season comes to an end

The Fort Chiswell Pioneers traveled to Pearisburg to take on Giles in the opening round of the playoffs and saw their season come to an end as they lost 35-13.

Giles got three scores from Ryan Beidleman on runs of 85, 15 and 5 yards, Logan O’Brien scored on 55 yard run and Chaston Ratcliffe had a 40 yard romp. Four big plays accounted for almost 200 yards as the Spartans finished with 411 rushing yards on 40 carries. They had zero passing yards and only threw one pass in the game.

Fort Chiswell got 72 rushing yards from Tanner Bailey and he also had 56 yards on seven catches and a touchdown. Sean Morgan had 64 rushing yards. Quarterback Brody Crockett competed 11 of 18 passes for 86 yards and he three two touchdown and one interception.

Giles scored first on O’Brien’s 55 yard run right up the middle with 7:24 left in the opening quarter. They would hit paydirt again on a Beidleman 85 yard run to go up 14-0 with just over three minutes left in the first half.

Fort Chiswell ( 7-4) would answer with a Crockett to Aaron Crawford 16 yard touchdown pass over the middle as it was 14-7 at intermission. Giles would take the opening second half kickoff and would drive the ball 80 yards on five plays that was capped off with a Beidleman five yard off tackle run. As they would stretch their lead to 28-7 on their next possession on Ratcliffe’s 40 yard jaunt.

The Pioneers would score with 8:38 left in the game as Crockett would find Bailey in the corner of the endzone . Giles ( 9-2) would finish the scoring on a Beidleman 15 yard run to go up 35-13. He would had 285 rushing yards on 28 carries. O’Brien had 58 yards on two rushes.

” They made some big plays on us and we had a couple of breakdowns on defense,” said a disappointed Fort Chiswell head coach Todd Tiller.” They have a good football team. I’m proud of my kids. We battled and fought to the end. They left it all on field tonight.”

Giles will advance to next weeks second round as they travel to Appomattox. The Pioneers after a winless campaign two years ago have won 16 games the last two years and make the playoffs both years. This team losses only five seniors . This team had to learn a new offense with a new offensive coordinator. Coach Tiller and his staff have turned the Pioneers program back into their winning ways.
