Radford defeats James River and advances to Region 2C semifinals

Radford…It tough to beat someone three times. The Radford Bobcats played the James River Knights for a fourth time this basketball season and easily defeated them 74-40 in the Bobcat Den.

Radford, the defending State Champions in Division 1 last year and are now in Division 2 this year, got 28 points from freshman Cam Cormany. Cormany stroked eight three-pointers and had 22 points at halftime for the 25-0 Bobcats. Quinton Morton-Robertson chipped in with 17 and P J Prioleau scored eight in the victory.

James River (14-11) got 13 points from Darious Cheatwood and Jerrel Andrews had 11 for the Knights.

The Bobcats came out very aggressive as they got 15 of the first 17 points of the game. They lead 24-8 after the opening quarter and never looked back. They were up 25 at halftime (47-22) as every Bobcat that dressed played.

Radford head coach Rick Cormany remarked, “We came out with a full court press tonight. We wanted to set the tempo for the game. We hadn’t pressed them the first three times we had faced them.” Coach then said, “It’s hard to face a team four times, three times is tough enough. Our game with Alleghany last week was the third time we had played them and it was a wake-up call. They (Alleghany) came for a fight and we just came to play. Tonight we wanted to up-tempo the game from the start.” Coach was then asked about his son scoring 28 points and he said, “It helps when we have the best point guard around in Q (Morton-Robertson). Q knew he was hot and he kept feeding him the ball.”

The victory put the Bobcats into the Region 2C semifinal game against Glenvar. It will be the third time the two teams have squared off this season.

Nine different Bobcats got into the scoring column. When asked why he put five new players in with three minutes left in the opening quarter, Coach Cormany remarked, “I had five guys that all needed a breather at the same time.”

Radford will play Glenvar this Friday night at Pulaski Co. High School in the Cougar Den. Game time for the Region 2C semifinal is slated to tip at 6:00 pm.
