Cougars doubles up Blacksburg

Dublin… It was senior night at the Cougar ball yard as they beat the Bruins of Blacksburg 10-5. But it was a sophomore that came up from the Cougar junior varsity that stole the limelight. Hunter Shrewsbury made his pitching debut for the varsity as he went 5.2 innings on the mound and knocked in four, going two for four and scored a run. In his 5.2 innings on the mound he struck out one and walked just one. He scattered eight hits, giving up three runs. Only two of those were earned and three of the hits came in the sixth inning.

Andrew Lowe continued his hot hitting going three for four, knocking in three. Senior Grant Osteen, playing his last regular season home game, was two of four at the plate scoring two runs and with 2 RBI.

The Cougars (8-8-1) played well and fielded the ball as they turned three double plays behind Shrewsbury. Seven Cougars scored at least one run. Six of them had a hit. It was their second win in a row and third victory in their last four games.

“I thought Hunter (Shrewsbury) pitched and hit extremely well. I’m happy for him,” said Cougar head coach Jared King. He then added, ”Hunter has invested and earned his time on the junior varsity and now the varsity. We had some tough decisions to make right before the season on who to keep on varsity and who on junior varsity. The kids that are sophomores had gotten to play every game on jv and they are more prepared for the varsity.”

When asked about turning the double plays Coach King remarked, ”We played real well and fielded the ball. This was our second in a row real good team victory effort.”

The Cougars scored two in the first to go up 2-1 and then three more in the second. They crossed the plate five more times in the fourth to go up 10-2.

Blacksburg (8-8) got two RBI from Hunter Radford and Sebastian Cianelli was three for three and scored twice. He had three doubles and also drew a walk. Michael Olszewski was the starting and losing pitcher for the Bruins.

The Cougars will be back in action today as they go to Christiansburg to take on the Blue Demons and go to Salem Thursday. Both games are slated for 5 pm.
